BMW has officially unveiled the 2014 BMW i3 in New York City which debuted as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show two years ago.



The visionary design of the BMW i3 showcases both BMW's customary sporting capability and the efficiency of a four-seater with authentic clarity.



Some notable features include a distinctive BMW kidney grille, U-shaped LED headlights, the "black belt" extending from the bonnet over the roof into the rear, opposing "coach" doors, "stream flow" side contours and 19- or 20-inch forged light-alloy wheels.



On the interior the leather used is treated solely with natural substances, with olive tree leaf extract which serves as a tanning agent. The instrument panel surround and door trim panels use fibres from the kenaf plant. Added to which, 25 per cent (by weight) of the plastic used in the interior has been replaced with recycled materials or renewable raw materials.



Three different trim levels - Loft, Lodge and Suite come equipped with air conditioning, USB/Bluetooth/SIM Card connectivity and a freestanding 6.5-inch iDrive display. Some features as GPS navigation, heated front seats, electrically-operated glass roof and automatic climate control are optional.



The 2014 BMW i3 is powered by a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor that generates a maximum output of 125 kW/170 hp and peak torque of 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft). Its instantaneous power flows to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. It can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, an hits a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph) and can travel 130 - 160 kilometres (81 - 99 miles) on a single charge.
