GM released 2012 Chevrolet Orlando LTZ

New Chevrolet Orlando LTZ

With an MSRP of $19,995, the 2012 Chevrolet Orlando is the least expensive seven-passenger vehicle you can buy in Canada; the Mazda5 has six seats, the North American C-MAX will get only five, and the Rondo EX with the optional third-row bench costs $23,795.

Now, don’t start planning a road trip to Vegas with six of your buddies just yet. The rearmost bench in the Orlando is best suited for kids; remember, this is a compact-sized vehicle. In addition, occupying all rows of seats leaves no room for cargo. You either haul stuff or a max load of passengers, not both. Same thing with the Mazda and the Kia.

Yet, with two or three kids, the Orlando makes a lot of sense. Flip down that third row and you get 739 litres of space, enough for carrying your family’s belongings. Fold down the second row as well, and you get about 1,600 litres of volume; only the Rondo is bigger inside.

One advantage I think the Mazda has over the Chevy concerns its sliding side doors. Kids can carelessly open their door in a shopping centre parking lot and dent the car beside; not so with sliding doors. The Orlando also has rather wide B-pillars, which create blind spots when you’re trying to merge into traffic or change lanes.

The Chevrolet Orlando benefits from supportive seats up front and a good driving position. The switchgear layout is also well thought-out, while the sound system includes a USB port in our tester, concealed in a storage compartment behind the button interface; unfortunately, bigger USB keys will prevent you from closing the lid. And navigating through MP3 file folders is a little fussy.

Every Orlando is equipped with a 2.4L inline-4, which develops 174 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual is available, but we think 95% of buyers will choose the 6-speed automatic instead. The 0-100 km/h sprint takes 10.4 seconds with the automatic, while fuel economy ratings are 10.6/6.9 L/100km city/highway.

Unfortunately, our average of 12L/100km isn’t nearly as impressive. We’re driving conservatively, we’re easing away from stoplights very smoothly, and at 100 km/h, the engine spins at only 1,900 rpm; heck, we’re eco-driving the Orlando, and it’s still consuming more than expected. Ironically, the bigger and heavier Equinox crossover boasts better fuel economy ratings.

Fuel issues aside, the 2.4L engine is up to the task of getting the Orlando up to speed swiftly, while the ride is comfortable for everyone including rear-seat passengers. However, the on-center feel of the electric-assist steering isn’t very precise. Overall, Chevy’s multipurpose vehicle may not be as fun to drive as the sportier Mazda5, but it isn’t a chore either.

The base Orlando LS includes keyless entry, power windows, six airbags, a 6-speaker stereo as well as traction and electronic stability control systems, while A/C is optional. The 1LT gains a telescopic steering column, power heated mirrors, body-coloured door handles and cruise control. Adding goodies such as alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port and heated seats brings us up to the 2LT, which starts at $23,595.

Our tester is the top-shelf LTZ trim, however, with the optional leather seating package and power sunroof. Total price before taxes, freight and delivery charges: $30,505.

In comparison, a loaded Mazda5 GT costs $28,430, while a Kia Rondo EX V6 Luxury costs $27,195.

The Chevrolet Orlando is a competent multipurpose vehicle that can hold its own against its rivals, and so far this year, it’s selling slightly better than both the 5 and the Rondo. The LTZ trim is too expensive, but a 2LT is a reasonable deal for what’s included with it.

2013 Jaguar XJ Ultimate Release

2013 Jaguar XJ Ultimate design

Jaguar car maker has announced new car with called 2013 Jaguar XJ Ultimate. A full-length, leather-trimmed centre console separates the two individually tailored rear seats which feature power adjustment, ventilation, massage and lumbar functions. A table, machined from solid aluminium with piano-black and chrome detailing, rises up from the centre console at the touch of a button to provide a working area, its role supplemented by the provision of two third-generation iPads with wireless keyboards that are housed in bespoke leather-trimmed docks in the rear of the front seats.

To underline its purpose in ensuring that passengers remain cosseted at all times, the Jaguar XJ Ultimate features revisions to the suspension to optimise rear ride comfort, with no compromise to the car's breadth of dynamic ability.

The exterior detailing of the 2013 Jaguar XJ Ultimate offers discreet clues to the model's figurehead status with sculpted lower air intakes chromed to match the grille, polished stainless steel oval exhaust pipe finishers, unique dual-surfaced alloy wheels and subtle 'Ultimate' badging.

The XJ Ultimate is available with Jaguar's existing 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine, its powerful and efficient 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged diesel, and a new 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol unit, all driving the rear wheels via an eight-speed transmission.

The Jaguar XJ introduced a mouldbreaking coup design ethos to its class, taking Jaguar's established principle of long, unbroken feature lines and applying them to a decidedly 21st century form. Dramatically different from its competitors, the all-aluminium XJ captures the essential Jaguar design elements of elegance, muscularity, sleekness and strength.

2013 Jaguar XJ Ultimate will also be offered with a new 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine being introduced to the range for the 2013 model year. This engine, which in the Jaguar XJ Ultimate will produce 340PS and 450Nm, draws on the award-winning technology inherent to Jaguar's V8 and offers similar performance to the naturally-aspirated version of that engine (which is not available in the XJ Ultimate), but with the emissions and fuel economy advantages of a V6.

2013 Lexus ES350 and ES300h Hybrid Unveiled

2013 Lexus ES350 design

The introduction of the all-new 2013 ES350 and ES300h marks the sixth generation of Lexus’ popular luxury sedan since its introduction over 20 years ago. Featuring the signature Lexus spindle grille, a progressive new design and enhanced handling, the ES brings new levels of refinement and quality to the entry luxury segment. Now available with Lexus Hybrid Drive, the ES is sure to impress new and loyal consumers.

“Since its introduction in 1989, the ES has been the benchmark luxury sedan for quality, reliability, ride comfort and value,” said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. “The new ES350 and the first ever ES hybrid raise the bar once again.”

For the first time, the Lexus ES will be available with Lexus Hybrid Drive.Featuring a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine, the ES300h is expected to earn EPA fuel economy ratings of approximately 40 mpg city, 39 mpg highway and 39 mpg combined. The ES300h generates 200 total system horsepower.

The new, low friction engine utilizes a sophisticated power management system and high compression ratio
(12.5:1) to increase overall efficiency. Equipped with an electric water pump, electric power steering, and an integrated hybrid electric motor/generator, this engine does not require any accessory belts. The
beltless design helps improve fuel economy and overall reliability.

The Lexus ES350 is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine with Dual VVT-i that delivers 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,700. The six-speed sequential-shift automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) provides enhanced driving performance, fuel efficiency and smooth shifts. Low friction materials further improve efficiency and help with the ES350′s EPA-fuel economy estimates of 21 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.

Both the Lexus ES350 and ES300h feature a Drive Mode selector. Normal mode provides a blend of performance and efficiency that is suited to everyday driving, while Eco mode favors fuel economy. Sport mode increases powertrain and steering responsiveness, and for the ES300h, the IP changes from the hybrid power monitor to a tachometer. The ES300h adds an EV mode which allows short distance drives, at reduced speed, using only the power from the hybrid battery pack.

Suspension changes, a stiffer body and a quicker steering gear ratio deliver more precise handling in the new 2013 Lexus ES.

The front suspension employs opposite-wound coil springs to help enhance straight-line stability. Revised rear suspension geometry and improved shock absorber damping characteristics enhance ride comfort. The steering gear ratio has been reduced from 16.1:1 to 14.8:1 to help deliver a more responsive
and direct steering feel. Increased body rigidity is achieved through lightweight, high tensile strength steel, added bracing and more spot welds. Airflow is smoothed beneath the vehicle, improving stability and fuel economy, and reducing drag.

The ES will be equipped with standard 215/55R17 low rolling resistance tires on 17-inch alloy wheels.
The Lexus ES350 will offer optional high-gloss 17-inch wheels and, for the first time, 18-inch high-gloss alloy wheels.

2013 Kia Sorento Facelift Revealed

New Kia Sorento

Our week in the 2013 Sorento came not long after a week in a 2012 model. Both were front-drive EX models…one notch from the top of the line. Differences? The 2013 EX makes leather trim standard. The ’12 had a 2.4 liter four-cylinder, the ’13 had a 3.5 liter V6. Frankly, the four is smooth and powerful enough for most driving…and there’s a significant fuel economy difference: The four’s 22 city/32 highway drops to 20 city/26 highway with the V6. Not a big deal in town, but six fewer on the open road is a big drop.

Apart from more frequent $50 a tank fillups (at $3.45 a gallon) there’s not much not to like. Plenty of room for people and their things, a relatively quiet and smooth ride, carlike handling and a raft of features. Opt for the EX model and in addition to the aforementioned leather, you’ll get a six-speed automatic transmission, independent front and rear suspension, 5-spoke hyper-finish alloy wheels, a full complement of airbags and active headrests, anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic stability control, downhill brake and hill-start assist control, tire pressure monitoring, fog lamps, heated outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, privacy glass and a rear spoiler.

Inside, there’s more: Dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows, locks and mirrors, UVO in-vehicle infotainment system with rear camera, USB, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, power driver’s seat with lumbar support, push-button start, cruise control, automatic light control, a tilt and telescoping steering column and interior accent illumination.

Base price for all that: $27,950. Which, if you haven’t been keeping up with Kia, sounds like a lot for the brand, but isn’t. And, in fact, is a bargain compared to direct competitors.

Our tester got loaded beyond the standard stuff, though: $2,000 for the Limited Package (navigation with Sirius Traffic), an air-cooled driver’s seat, memory driver’s seat and mirrors, power folding ourside mirrors and Homelink)…$3,400 for the Premium Package 2 (First Aid kit, Infinity surround sound audio system, heated front seats, power passenger seat, a 50/50 split folding third row seat, auto-dimming mirror and panoramic sunroof)…$65 for a rear bumper protector…$50 for a cargo net and $125 for a cargo cover.

Grand total, including $800 for freight and handling: $34,390. Again, your brain may have trouble putting the phrase “Thirty four thousand dollars” together with the name “Kia”. But try loading a competitor to that level and see what the bottom line is. And there’s Kia’s 10 year/100,000 mile limited powertrain warranty, 5 year/60,000 mile limited basic warranty and 5 years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance. It’s a compelling package…and one you shouldn’t ignore if you’re shopping in this segment.

Range Rover Evoque Tears Through a Mondeo Police Car During a High-Speed Chase

Posted on 02.22.2013 15:00 by
Simona

Trying to stop a Range Rover driving at a speed of 150 km/h (93 mph) is not always a good move. Three French police officers have learned it in the most tragic way, as two of them - age 32 and 40 - were killed and the third one, aged 54, was seriously injured.

First details suggest that the police officers were chasing the Range Rover for multiple infractions of the road. The police car - a Ford Mondeo - tried to block the SUV, which apparently had no intention to stop and the impact was of a "rare violence."

The Range Rover driver - age 22 - has a pretty hefty criminal record, as he was involved multiple small thefts and drug trafficking, and was arrested five times for driving offenses. Initial reports suggest that during this incident he was under influence and medical reports revealed 1.4 grams of alcohol per liter of blood, while the limit is 0.5 grams / liter of blood. He was also without driving license.

Is this the BMW 4-Series Convertible ?

Is this the BMW 4-Series Convertible ?

2014 BMW 4-Series Convertible (not official) / BMWBLOG

Should enter producing in November

BMWBlog has acquired what appears to be a photo of the BMW 4-Series Convertible ahead of its launch later this year.

The person who sent this picture says it's a prototype but 90 percent of the design will be retained for the production version. As expected, it looks like a toned down version of the 4-Series Coupe Concept shown last month at 2013 NAIAS in Detroit and keeps the same design cues seen on the production-ready 4-Series Coupe which we have spotted in several spy shots.

The coupe will enter production this July in Munich, while its cabrio sibling is scheduled to go into production in November at BMW's Regensburg factory. Based on a leaked production chart, the 4-Series Convertible (F33) will be available as 428i and 435i models, with no plans at the moment for xDrive all-wheel drive versions.

Volkswagen confirms XL1 technical details

 Volkswagen confirms XL1 technical details

2013 Volkswagen XL1 production version

Arriving in Geneva

Volkswagen has released technical details about the ultra-frugal XL1 scheduled to arrive at Geneva Motor Show next month in production form.

The Volkswagen XL1 features a two-cylinder 800cc TDI engine producing 47 hp (35 kW) which is backed by an electric motor developing 27 hp (20 kW), while the necessary juice is provided by a 5.5 kWh battery pack. VW says the car has a fuel consumption of only 0.9 liters / 100 km (261 mpg US or 313 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of just 21 g/km.

With a drag coefficient of 0.189 and a 2224mm wheelbase, the XL1 is 3.888mm long and 1665mm wide, and tips the scales at 795 kg (1752 lbs) thanks to its carbon fiber body. The German company says the plug-in hybrid will need 12.7 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) and has a limited top speed of 99.4 mph (160 km/h).

The front features a double wishbone suspension, while the back gains a semi-trailing link setup. Other highlights include ceramic brake discs and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) anti-roll bars. It can travel on electricity for 31 miles (50 km) but the range can be expanded to 310 miles (499 km) if the small 10-liter fuel tank is filled.

The first batch of XL1s will consist of 50 cars and after that Volkswagen will build it on demand. No details for the moment about price.

2014 Mercedes S-Class presentation leaked, debuts in May

2014 Mercedes S-Class presentation leaked, debuts in May

2014 Mercedes S-Class presentation leak 21.2.2013

Shaping up to be a technological tour de force

Mercedes has been slowly teasing us with technical details about the 2014 S-Class, but we're starting to learn more about the model thanks to an anonymous tipster who has sent us documents from a recent presentation.

First and foremost, the documents suggest the S-Class will go into production in August and be launched in September. It will eventually be followed by the S550 4MATIC and the S63 AMG 4MATIC in October or November.

The car will have an evolutionary design and feature a variety of aluminum components including the roof and front end. The model will be available in eleven exterior colors including three new options: Diamond Silver, Ruby Black and Anthracite Blue.

The cabin will come nicely equipped with a wood/leather steering wheel, LED ambient lighting and a Burmester audio system. We can also expect a panoramic sun roof, illuminated door sill plates and soft-close doors. The documents suggest a "dramatic reduction" in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), so expect additional sound deadening material as well.

Speaking of the interior, the car will be equipped with two 12.3-inch displays that will be used for the instrument cluster and COMAND infotainment system. The latter device will feature GPS navigation, an iPod/MP3 interface and mbrace2 technology. The system is also slated to gain an Audi MMI Touch-like touchpad in 2015.

Buyers will be able to select between four different wood trims including Burl Walnut, Myrtle Sunburst, Black Popular and "Metalized Ash." The AMG variant, on the other hand, will offer Piano Black and Carbon Fiber trim.

Customers will also have a choice between leather, Nappa leather and designo leather seats. They will reportedly be available in up to six different colors.

Other options include heated / ventilated seats, a surround view camera and a rear seat entertainment system. There will also be an "Air Balance Package" that filters and ionizes the air and can dispense perfume.

The death of Maybach has allowed the S-Class to move up market, so the model will be offered with rear "Chauffer Seats" that are ten-way adjustable and have a power foot rest. We can also expect Maybach-inspired tray tables that are deployed from the rear center console.

On the technology front, the S-Class will be offered with an advanced Night View Assist PLUS system that can detect both humans and animals. When a collision is imminent, the system will automatically activate to warn the driver to take immediate action.

The S-Class will also be available with Active Seat Belts. They are power-deployable and will emerge from the seats when the rear passenger doors are opened. Besides being an interesting footnote, the belts will work with the PRE-SAFE system to automatically tension themselves when a collision is imminent.

Speaking of seat belts, the S-Class will have rear seat airbags that promise to reduce injuries in the event of a crash.

To keep passengers as comfortable as possible, the S-Class will be offered with a Magic Body Control system. Described as the next-generation of the Active Body Control suspension, Magic Body Control will use a camera to scan the road for imperfections and then prepare the suspension to compensate as best as possible.

The S-Class will reportedly be unveiled at an invitation only event in Germany on May 15th, so expect to learn more in the coming months.

2013 GTA Spano teaser image digitally enhanced 20.2.2013

Slated to have 900 HP

Spania GTA has released the first teaser image of the updated GTA Spano that will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

Looking virtually identical to its predecessor, the revamped model will reportedly have a supercharged 8.3-liter V10 engine that produces 900 HP (662 kW) and 1000 Nm (737 lb-ft) of torque - an increase of 80 HP (59 kW) and 40 Nm (29 lb-ft). Despite the increased performance, Spania says the car will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 350 km/h (217 mph). These numbers could be a tad conservative as they remain unchanged from the previous model.

The Geneva Motor Show kicks off on March 5th, so expect to learn more in the coming weeks.

The Ferrari F70 is Rumored to Cost More Than $1.6 Million

Posted on 02.20.2013 13:00 by
Simona

1.

The new Ferrari Enzo - currently known internally as the F150 and to some as the F70 - will make its world debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. While the auto show is still a few weeks away, rumors suggest that in Italy the model will be priced at about 1.21 million (about $1.6 million at the current exchange rates). By comparison, back in 2002 Enzo was priced at 665,000 (about $890,000 at the current exchange rates). The model will be limited to only 499 units.

Final specifications on the new Enzo are still to be released, but the Italian maker did promised it will deliver much more than the current F12berlinetta, which delivers a total of 740 horsepower. Still, when compared to the current supercar, the next Enzo will combine a V-12 normally aspirated direct-injection gasoline engine with an electric motor for a total output of more than 900 horsepower.

The model will use lots of carbon fiber in its construction in an attempt to keep the car’s total weight as low as possible.

Full details will follow closer to its official launch in Geneva.

Audi R8 V10 Biturbo GT by MTM

Posted on 02.20.2013 14:00 by
Simona

Do you remember the Audi R8 V10 Biturbo unveiled by MTM back in 2011? For the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the tuner revised this package and came up with a new R8 V10 Biturbo GT package, that unlike the previous package which delivered a total of 777 horsepower, the new GT package delivers a total of 802 horsepower at 6,980 rpm and 892 Nm (657 pound-feet) of torque between 2,750 and 6,280 rpm.

This extra horsepower pushes the R8 to a top speed in excess of 360 km/h (223 mph). In terms of acceleration, the R8 V10 Biturbo GT hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in just 10.6 seconds and 300 km/h (186 mph) in only 26 seconds.

While the exterior remains pretty much unchanged, the new GT package also received a three-way adjustable special chassis and a new set of wheels measuring 9-by-20 inches up front and 12.5-by-20 inches out back. These 20-inch BIMOTO wheels are wrapped up in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup rubber.

Dragging the R8 V10 Biturbo GT to a halt are 380-by-34 mm (14.96-by-1.33-inch) dimpled rotors squeezed by eight-piston calipers. Getting this monster through the twist is a set of MTM coilovers by KW with adjustable damping.

Still, if you are interested in acquiring this package, you will have to pay an impressive 450,000 - about $600,000 at the current exchange rates.

Just yesterday we brought you the first spy shots of the upcoming coupe version of the next-generation Mercedes S-Class. Now the car was taken out for another testing session and our spy photographers were there to catch it again. When compared to the images we brought you yesterday, the ones from today show some close-up images of the car.

As you can see, the S-Class Coupe is wearing an impressive amount of camouflage, but still it is pretty easy to notice the CL-Class' replacement will be one of the most impressive models offered by Mercedes in years.

The car is features a stunning shape with a wide and muscular body, and the rear lights placed horizontally for an even wider impression.

The coupe version will be built on the same platform as the next-generation S-Class and will be offered with the same drivetrains and technology features as its sedan brother.

A few weeks ago it was been rumored that Spyker will be unveiling a Porsche 911 competitor at the upcoming 2013 Geneva Motor Show. While no other details have been offered after that, today Spyker has unveiled a first teaser image for a new B6 concept set to be unveiled on March 5th in Geneva.

The company offered no other details on this concept, so we cannot confirm is this is indeed the previously rumored Porsche 911 competitor, but Spyker did confirm it will mark the "global resurgence of Spyker."

Spyker offered no other details on this new B6 concept, but looking at the first teaser image you will notice a coupe-like profile, with elegant lines, short hood and pronounced wheel arches. There are no details on the powertrain just yet, but you shouldn’t be surprised to see a hybrid or an electric motor under the hood.

Full details on the new Spyker B6 Concept will be unveiled during its world debut in Geneva.

Video: MINI Countryman Does Crazy Back Flip in the French Alps

Posted on 02.18.2013 07:00 by
Kirby Garlitos

The warning disclaimer before the start of the video seems appropriate. Nobody in the right frame of mind should ever try duplicating this stunt, let alone even remotely think about it.

Leave it up to the pros, fellas.

MINI’s participation in the stunt is indicative enough that this won’t be your average performance. See, when you have the German automaker bringing in a heavily-modified MINI Countryman with GRAVIT-T team driver, Guerlain Chicherit, in the setting of the Tignes Ski Resort in the French Alps, you can do a whole lot of crazy things, including performing a 360-degree backflip that clearly goes way past the bounds of sanity.

To their credit, they managed to pull the stunt off and it looks pretty remarkable with the magic of video editing, but for the love of God, this is one stunt that no matter how good it looks, you better need to stay away from at all costs.

Watch the video; that’s all you need to do

Mercedes E63 AMG V8 Supercars Racer

Posted on 02.18.2013 08:00 by
Kirby Garlitos

The racecars headlining Australia’s V8 Supercar Series are starting to take shape and over the weekend we saw another one of the cars get its own public unveiling.

Erebus Motorsport took the time to present their prized racer for the series: the E63 AMG V8 Supercars Racecar.

The car itself holds a historical component to it because, as a racecar built in Australia, it’s the first time that an AMG racer was manufactured outside of Germany. Erebus Motorsports is bringing three unique models of the E63 AMG V8 Supercar Series to the racing season, each coming with a unique livery. Of note though is the overall look of the racecars, all three of which are pretty impressive in their own right.

Mechanically, the E63 AMG V8 Supercar Racecar has to subject itself to "Car of the Future" regulations, which means that engine displacement should not exceed 5 liters, rpm are limited between 7,000 and 7,500, and most importantly, horsepower shouldn’t go past 650 ponies.

In the case of the E63 AMG V8 Supercar Series, the team had to "make do" with a modified version of the V8 engine on the SLS AMG. Considering that the standard SLS powertrain includes a 6.3-liter V8, it likely took a significant amount of tweaking just to keep in line with the series regulations.

Expect the Mercedes E63 AMG V8 Supercar Racecars to compete with the likes of the Holden Commodore V8 and the Nissan Altima V8 when Australia’s V8 Supercar Series kicks off next month.

TopSpeed Rendering: 2016 BMW M8

Posted on 02.18.2013 11:00 by
Simona

A few days ago, we reported that BMW is preparing to add a new supercar to its lineup just in time to celebrate its centenary. The model was previously rumored to carry the M1 name, but new details suggest that instead BMW will opt for the M8 name - an indication that the supercar will share the carbon-fiber and aluminum chassis with the upcoming BMW i8.

While the i8 is a hybrid supercar, the next M8 will adopt a standard twin-turbocharged V8 engine with an output of about 600 horsepower. Also, BMW will try to keep the weight as low as possible - expect something close to 3000 lbs. As a result, the sprint from 0 to 60 mph will be made in about 3 seconds, while top speed will go up to about 200 mph.

Today, we have created a rendering for the M8, and as you probably expected, its design will be inspired by the M1 Hommage concept car unveiled at the 2008 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.

Fresh Design. Well-Balanced Proportions.
The body design of the 2011 BMW X5 is characterized by well-balanced proportions that accentuate the vehicle's powerful presence and agility. A long wheelbase, short front and rear body overhangs, and large light-alloy wheels provide a visual balance between the front and rear of the vehicle. Square-shaped, carefully flared wheel arches hint at the BMW X5's all-wheel drive traction and other-roads capability. The body lines sweep upwards from the front and rear wheels, communicating BMW's near-perfect 50-50 front-rear weight distribution which is so essential to the BMW X5's legendary driving dynamic.

The sides of the BMW X5 are elegantly stretched though the strong horizontal lines of each side. The surface of the hood flows seamlessly into the waiseline, while the prominent, gently inclined contour line at the door handle level extends from the front wheel arches to the rear of the vehicle. These character lines symbolize power, stability, and presence.

With its distinctively contoured hood, large BMW kidney grille and dual round headlights, the new BMW X5 boasts an expressive front end that symbolizes power and presence. The newest interpretation of the BMW X5's look is led by the redesign of the front fascia and position of the standard foglamps. Due to an increase in the number of elements painted body color, the front end gives the impression of being lower. At the same time, the increased size of both the central and outer air intakes hint at the boosted engine output. The black trim at the bottom edge of the body is now considerably narrower. A matte-finished silver protection plate extends across the entire width of the central air intake, emphasizing the muscular features of the SAV, and accentuates the new BMW X5's character.

The dual round Xenon Adaptive headlights and foglamps are now situated higher and closer to the kidney grille. The BMW X5's new headlight fixtures emphasize high quality and sporting intentions. BMW's signature corona rings serve as position lights and daytime driving lights.

The newly conceived rear apron matches the graphic structure of the front end, while the intricately designed surrounds of the dual exhaust pipes are painted in body color to underline the BMW X5's premium character. In the center, a matte-finished silver protection element emphasizes strength and durability suitable for other-roads use.

Above the rear bumper, the rear of the new X5 is divided by parallel horizontal lines. The result is an accentuation of the width, highlighting the vehicle's athletic capabilities. The L-shaped taillight fixtures, each with two LED light banks, create the BMW-signature nighttime appearance of the rear end.

A choice of new body colors provides further visual enhancements. The metallic colors Deep Sea Blue, Platinum Grey, and Sparkling Bronze are now available for the BMW X5. Inside, the available Nevada Leather can be chosen in stunning new Oyster or Cinnamon Brown colors in addition to the familiar Sand Beige, and Black, and matte Satin Silver interior trim strips are added if the owner does not select from the available Brushed Aluminum, Dark Bamboo, Light Poplar, or Burl Walnut wood trims.

BMW X5 xDrive50i: BMW's Twin-Turbocharged V-8.
The new BMW X5 xDrive50i takes its place as the flagship of the X5 family, yielding 400 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 450 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 - 4,500 rpm from its twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V-8 engine. Introduced in the BMW X6 in Spring of 2008, this all-aluminum V-8 features High Precision direct fuel injection, "reverse-flow" architecture for revolutionary responsiveness and packaging, and BMW' s VANOS variable valve timing technology. Together, these features create what may be the perfect balance between high fuel efficiency, low emissions, and the dominant, dynamic performance expected of a BMW V-8. The 0-60 mph sprint is accomplished in 5.3 seconds.

BMW X5 xDrive50i starts at $59,275 including Destination & Handling.
As part of the V-8 engine's reverse-flow architecture, the twin turbochargers are situated in the valley of the engine's "V" and exhale separately into two catalytic converters which are located on top of the engine and exit aftward into the large stainless-steel exhaust system via downpipes on either side of the new 8-speed automatic transmission. The exhaust streams remain separated until they meet in the large muffler at the rear of the vehicle and exit through two large, trapezoidal exhaust tips.

BMW X5 xDrive35i: BMW's Turbocharged Inline-6 with Valvetronic.
BMW X5 xDrive 35i receives a brand new inline-6 gasoline engine, internally dubbed "N55." The new engine features the same 3.0-liter displacement and 300 horsepower output of its predecessor (the "N54"), but features a single twin-scroll turbocharger in place of the previous twin, low-mass turbocharger units. Furthermore, the new inline-6 of the BMW X5 xDrive35i is the first BMW inline-6 to combine BMW's revolutionary Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, High Precision direct fuel injection, and turbocharging. The result of combining this new inline-6 with the new 8-speed automatic is an BMW X5 with incredibly spontaneous responsiveness, exceptional power, and remarkable efficiency. The new BMW X5 xDrive35i will perform the 0-60mph sprint in 6.4 seconds, coincidentally on the same pace as the outgoing V-8 powered BMW X5 xDrive48i.

For the 2011 model year, BMW has made the X5 xDrive35i available in two additional trim levels: "Premium" and "Sports Activity."

The essential BMW X5 xDrive35i has an MSRP of $46,675 including Destination & Handling, and includes a popular profile of standard equipment often specified by BMW X5 customers, including BMW's Xenon Adaptive headlights, Rain Sensor with automatic headlight control, HD Radio, automatic climate control, foglights, 18" light alloy wheels, cruise control, and anti-theft alarm system. A Convenience Package is optional and adds the large panoramic moonroof, auto-dimming mirrors, Dark Burl Walnut, Bamboo, or Light Poplar wood interior trim, BMW Ambiance Lighting, and BMW Assist with Bluetooth. Stand alone options include rear side window shades, Navigation system with Real Time Traffic Information and Voice Command, satellite radio with 1-year subscription, and an iPod / USB adapter interface.

The BMW X5 xDrive35i Premium has an MSRP of $52,475 including Destination & Handling and includes a boosted profile of standard equipment, such as 19" light alloy wheels, roof rails and panoramic moonroof, power adjustable steering column, iPod / USB adapter interface, and privacy glass. Best of all, it includes standard Nevada Leather. In addition, buyers of the Premium model may choose up to four packages, including the Active Ventilated Seat Package, Convenience Package, Cold Weather Package, and Technology Package. Each package includes a raft of focused features that enhance comfort and convenience, allowing buyers to better customize the BMW X5 to personal taste. Third Row seating, which enables the BMW X5 to accommodate up to 7 passengers, also becomes available on this model.

The BMW X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity has an MSRP of $54,975 including Destination & Handling and includes even more standard equipment than the Premium model, such as 20" light alloy wheels, sport seats, Shadowline exterior trim, and Anthracite headliner. In addition to the packages available on the Premium model, customers may add the popular M Sport Package to the BMW X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity model. The M Sport Package includes 20" wheels with performance tires, the Adaptive Drive system, aluminum roof rails, M door sill plates, M driver footrest, M steering wheel, M aerodynamic enhancements, and increased top speed limiter (150 mph).

New 8-speed Automatic Transmission with Steptronic.
On both new gasoline models of the BMW X5, sending the newfound power to the standard xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system is BMW's new 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic control. The new 8-speed transmission is standard in the BMW X5 xDrive50i and X5 xDrive35i, and raises the industry standard for compactness, efficiency, and gear selection. The new transmission weighs no more than its 6-speed predecessor, yet offers closer ratios in the lower gears for improved acceleration and two additional "tall" gears for relaxed, efficient cruising. BMW's 8-speed automatic was introduced on the 5-Series Gran Turismo and 760Li Sedan in the fall of 2009.

Using the console-mounted e-shifter, the BMW X5 driver chooses from three shifting programs: Drive, Drive Sport, and Manual. In Manual mode, the driver selects from the eight forward gear ratios via the + / - action of the shifter (push forward to downshift; pull back to upshift). At any speed, Neutral is easily selected via a forward push of the selector from Drive and, when at a standstill, Park is selected by depressing the "P" button atop the shifter, or by pushing the Engine Start-Stop button (doing so will also stop the engine).

BMW's Brake Energy Regeneration system is also fitted to the gasoline X5 models. It incorporates a special deep-cycle Glass Mat battery with programmed alternator disengagement so that, most of the time, the vehicle's battery is only charged while the vehicle is coasting or braking. Over time, the Brake Energy Regeneration system can save 1-2% on fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration is another feature in BMW's EfficientDynamics portfolio of small features and adjustments which have a cumulative effect on the efficiency-performance balance of each BMW vehicle.

BMW X5 xDrive35d: Maintaining the Benchmark with BMW Advanced Diesel Technology.
The BMW Advanced Diesel X5 xDrive35d was introduced to the United States as a 2009 model, and despite increased competition remains the fastest, most fuel efficient diesel-powered vehicle in its class. The huge torque output of 425 lb-ft. at 1750-2250 rpm speaks for itself; BMW X5 xDrive35d drivers will marvel at this engine's robust response at low to medium speeds. The peak power output of 265 hp also makes an impact, as does the resulting 0-60-mph time of 6.9 seconds. It returns EPA mileage estimates of 19 mpg city and 26 highway.

For the 2011 model, BMW has made no changes to the award-winning BMW Advanced Diesel powertrain, but rather has focused efforts to ensure the BMW X5 xDrive35d benefits from the latest design updates to the X5 family. Despite the enhancements for the new model year, MSRP for this model remains $52,175 including Destination & Handling.

BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance optimizes emission management by incorporating an oxidation catalyst placed close to the engine, a diesel particulate filter housed in the same unit, and an SCR catalyst with urea injection. Apart from filtering out even the smallest particles from the flow of exhaust gases, this combination ensures effective reduction of nitric oxides (NOX) by way of a chemical reaction within the exhaust system initiated by the injection of a small dose of urea referred to as Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Into the exhaust stream. The ammonia (NH3) generated in this process within the SCR catalyst subsequently converts the nitric oxides (NO and, respectively, NO2) in the exhaust gas into environmentally compatible nitrogen (N2) and water vapor (H2O).

BMW has developed a two-tank system for DEF ensuring convenient use of this new technology with all the benefits and ease required by the customer: The amount of DEF required in each case is drawn from the active tank comprising approximately 1.6 gallons by means of a dosage pump. And since the urea solution would freeze at a temperature of 12.2o F (-11oC), this active tank, as well as the dosage pipes are heated.

- BMW M3 Race Version (2009)

Bmw M3 Race Version (2009)

BMW presented the racing version of the new BMW M3 at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. Powered by a 485 bhp eight cylinder engine, this impressive race car has been designed to compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) beginning in 2009. The car is based on the fourth generation of the BMW M3, the high-performance sports car produced by BMW M GmbH.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen says: "With the sporting genes of the production BMW M3 being clearly evident, developing a racing version of the car was the next logical step. The fact that the road-going vehicle is fitted with a V8 engine as standard provided us with an ideal base. However, the BMW M3 is more than a race car, it has achieved legendary status amongst race fans across the globe. I am convinced that this unique story of the BMW M3 racing cars will now be expanded upon by the addition of further chapters."

BMW's 2009 entry into the American Le Mans Series will be driven by a partnership between BMW of North America, LLC and Rahal Letterman Racing, co-owned by US motorsport legend Bobby Rahal.

"We are very pleased to be returning to the American Le Mans Series with our latest generation BMW M3," states Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO, BMW of North America. "Sports car racing has been part of BMW of North America's history practically from day one. Just two weeks after the company was incorporated in March 1975, a BMW CSL won the Twelve Hours of Sebring. We are confident that the fourth generation M3 will continue the legacy of its two predecessors which combined to win six manufacturer's championships over nine seasons in US sports car racing. As it has been in the past we believe the ALMS is the ideal venue to showcase the potential of the newest BMW M3."

Echoing that sentiment Bobby Rahal adds, "BMW has an illustrious racing heritage. Rahal Letterman Racing is eagerly anticipating, not only becoming part of that heritage, but helping to enhance it. Our dedication to this project will be without equal and we look forward to racing at the front of the grid with BMW in the years to come."

Martin Birkmann, Motorsports Manager, BMW of North America, adds: "We are very excited to announce our return to the American Le Mans Series with the 4th generation M3 at the same time as the road car hits the BMW showrooms. We are also excited about our partnership with Rahal Letterman Racing. The ALMS offers racing where we can compete against the finest and most renowned automotive brands from Europe and the US. Motorsport is deeply ingrained in the BMW DNA and we are pleased to partner with an organization which shares that same heritage. Rahal Letterman Racing is the perfect partner to be behind the wheel of our new BMW M3 racing effort."

The BMW M3 Race Version: Sportiness personified.
In the course of developing the race version of the BMW M3, BMW's engineers were faced with an ambitious task: to improve upon the sportiness of an already sporting car. A better base would, though, be difficult to find. In standard form the vehicle delivers powerful dynamics and sporting aesthetics. Thanks to an eight cylinder engine producing 414 bhp, BMW's customers are provided with a unique driving experience.

Those engine blocks, cast in BMW's light alloy foundry in Landshut - the very source of BMW's Formula One castings - selected for race duty need to withstand even more power: the BMW P65 race engine delivers 485 bhp.

In order to enable the BMW M3 to make full use of this performance on the race circuit, the experts in Munich have not concentrated solely on the engine, but have race-tuned the chassis as well. The race version of the BMW M3 is wider and significantly lighter than its production equivalent, enabling it to perfectly transmit the power of its V8 to the track. Widespread use of carbon-reinforced plastic (CRP) provides proof of substantial weight reduction. As with the production version, the race car's roof is manufactured from this high-tech material.

The race version of the BMW M3 is clearly aimed at the top echelon of motorsport. As such, it is no surprise to discover that in the course of its development, begun in mid-2007, numerous Formula One techniques were applied. These include computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel analyses, both of which have ensured the best possible aerodynamic package for the BMW M3.

Intelligent control systems have been incorporated throughout the BMW M3. The POWER400 control unit actuates all the accessories fitted to the car, such as lights, wipers, etc., via two bus systems. Traditional relays and fuses are thus eliminated, ensuring considerable weight saving, improved reliability and ease of application. The functions of the BMW P65 engine are managed by an ECU 408 electronic control unit, developed in-house by BMW Motorsport. The software and applications, too, have been developed by the experts in Munich.

An intensive test program, during which the performance of the race car will be honed by BMW Motorsport, looms for the BMW M3 over the coming months. Development drivers will be BMW works drivers Andy Priaulx (GBR), J rg M ller (GER) and Augusto Farfus (BRA), currently racing in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). The aim is, after all, for the BMW M3 to be an immediate front-runner upon its comeback to the American Le Mans Series.

The BMW 6-Series Coup Concept is the latest chapter in a tradition which stretches back 70 years and is richly packed with memorable racing wins and many legendary icons in automotive design. Milestones in this evolution include the BMW 327 and BMW 327/28 models, the racing coup s based on the BMW 328, the BMW 503, the BMW 3200 CS, the BMW 2000 CS, the large coup s based on the BMW 3.0 CSi and, from 1976 onwards, the BMW 6-Series models.

With its flawless elegance and impressive performance the BMW 327 Coup , unveiled in 1938, quickly established itself as the brand's most exclusive pre-war model. With barely a pause, the dynamic performance was then taken a stage further by the BMW 327/28, whose 80 hp sports engine was taken from the BMW 328 Roadster model. In 1940, a one-off coup version of the BMW 328, driven by Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter B umer, was the overall winner of the Mille Miglia endurance race. This triumph came courtesy of rigorous lightweight design, optimised aerodynamics and a powerful and reliable 136 hp in-line six-cylinder engine. In other words, the winning vehicle displayed characteristics which still form the backbone for the design of the more sporty BMW models to this day. The traditional coup values were given a modern interpretation in the BMW Mille Miglia Concept Coup , unveiled by BMW in 2006 as a salute to the unsung heroes behind the BMW 328's triumph - the engineers.

In their respective decades, both the BMW 503 from 1955, designed by Albrecht Graf Goertz, and the BMW 2000 CS created by Wilhelm Hofmeister and unveiled in 1965 set new standards in coup design. The slim pillars and svelte roofline, the narrow BMW twin-kidney grille and the Hofmeister kink at the base of the C-pillar, named after BMW's chief designer of the time, gave the BMW 2000 CS an unmistakable and elegant styling signature. The design language was developed a stage further in the next-generation model - as was the sports performance, with an even more powerful range of engines. The proportions of the big coup were refined and improved by a longer bonnet, while twin round headlights gave the front end a characteristic sporty appearance. By 1973 the BMW 3.0 CS, BMW 3.0 CSi and BMW 3.0 CSL models had been launched, powered by in-line six-cylinder engines developing up to 206 hp. In motor sport, too, these models held sway for many years.

The BMW 6-Series has similarly stirred and spurred a passion for sporty driving in a stylish and luxurious two-door format for many years, right through to the BMW M6 Coup of today with its unmatched dynamism and athleticism and its 373 kW/507 hp high-revving ten-cylinder engine.

Classic coup proportions in a distinctly sporty format.
A BMW coup 's design is a stylish and authentic expression of superior sports performance rooted in the company's unique experience in engine and chassis development. The proportions, the aesthetically powerful design language and the flowing lines epitomise the characteristic blend of dynamism and unassailable elegance - a design principle that underpins the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept as well, though in a modern and innovative interpretation. The concept model is an extremely sporty premium luxury-class 2+2-seater. Taking passion for supreme performance to new levels in the BMW 6-Series range, it is an expression of driving enjoyment at its most exclusive.

The low silhouette of the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept points to the low centre of gravity, which is reflected in agile, surefooted handling. The long bonnet and a passenger cell which is set well back provide advance warning of the Coup 's eager responsiveness and its dynamic power delivery and sprinting performance. The powerful sculpting of the bodywork surfaces, particularly near the rear wheels, gives the concept model an even more athletic appearance, while the roofline in particular, flowing elegantly towards the trailing edge at the rear, is a reminder of the concept's carefully honed aerodynamic qualities.

Dynamic wave effect underpins naturally flowing lines and surfaces.
The bodywork surfaces are defined by bold, precise lines, which divide the body into a mix of concave- and convex-contoured surfaces. The counterpoint between lines and surfaces lends the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept a natural, authentic aura of sportiness. This interplay is reminiscent of wave motion on the surface of an ocean, generated by the ebb and flow of wind and tides.

All the bodywork lines are continuous and uninterrupted throughout their entire length. They connect the front, side and rear sections of the vehicle to create a sculpted body shape that radiates harmony from every angle.

Road-hugging front end: hallmark BMW styling cues in a new interpretation.
The wide, low-slung, road-hugging front-end stance of the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept is an accurate reflection of its sporting temperament. The bonnet surfaces are defined by four lines which gradually converge at the front of the vehicle. The two inner lines follow a trajectory towards the BMW emblem, while the two outer lines terminate at the outer edge of the BMW kidney grille, which is wider at the top than at the bottom. The BMW kidney grille marks the front extremity of the body, its slight forward rake imparting the first taste of sportiness to come. The effect is increased by the slight angle in the upper part of the kidney grille bars, which sport hardened glass inserts. This elaborate sculpting gives the hallmark kidney grille an extra-luxurious and avant-garde touch.

The headlights, which are set well back, and below them a bumper contour line that flows downwards and outwards, make the kidney grille appear even more dominant. The lower air intake runs the full width of the front end and is divided by horizontal chrome struts with an undulating surface. A crease defines the lower edge of the air intake and wraps round to the outer sides, where a slight curve draws attention to the wheels and thus to the sense of width. Sharply raked foglamps placed well to the outside of the bonnet, and powered by three adjacent LED light units, further accentuate the width and bold stance of the concept model.

Innovative technology, modified styling, typical BMW night-time look: all-LED twin round headlights make their debut.
The characteristic front-end appearance of the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept is partly down to the typical BMW twin round headlights. The outward-pointing top part of the trapezoidal headlight housing guides the eye to the widely flared wheel arches. With this concept model, BMW is for the first time presenting all-LED headlights with Adaptive Headlight functionality. LEDs are used for all functions, from the dipped and main beam to the sidelights and daytime running lights, and the direction indicators. The LED accent lights which cut across the top of the twin round headlights create the hooded, intent look characteristic of BMW models.

The innovative lighting technology is accentuated by the upscale styling. One of the cylindrical headlights emerges slightly further than the other from the interior of the light unit, thereby preserving the twin round headlight look even when viewed from the side. The headlights, which are levelled off at their lower edge, are bisected by horizontal ribs containing the LEDs. The diodes produce a strikingly bright white light that provides particularly intensive road illumination. They also reduce dazzle and have a very low electricity consumption. A further feature is that the all-LED headlights are used for both the dipped and the main beam functions, while Adaptive Headlight functionality is incorporated as well. That means the headlights follow the road, swivelling in line with the steering angle and at a speed matched to that of the vehicle.

The sidelights and daytime driving lights take the form of LED rings, the lower edge of which is levelled off - a characteristic theme of this innovative lighting technology. Horizontal strips of six LEDs under the twin headlights are used for the direction indicators. Their lines match those of the similarly horizontally styled LED foglamps, which are located in the lower air intake.

Side view: athletic elegance points to sporting supremacy.
The BMW 6-Series Coup Concept is a premium-class concept that combines supreme sports performance with style and assurance. At the visual level, these characteristics are communicated by a design that combines the athletic aura of a sports car on the one hand with luxurious elegance on the other. This is particularly striking in side view, where classic BMW coup features, presented here in a new interpretation, deftly highlight the distinctive character of this concept model.

The elegantly elongated silhouette of the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept presents the familiar hallmarks of a sporty BMW 2+2-seater, comprising a long bonnet and wheelbase, a passenger compartment which is set well to the rear and a dynamically flowing roofline. The athletic character of the concept model is generated by sculpted surfaces whose powerful flowing and merging contours create an authentic sports feel.

The side view of the vehicle is defined by four striking lines. The shoulder line runs in a fluent sweep from the headlights to the front wheel arch and on through the waistline and C-pillar to the tail. The typical BMW swage line runs parallel to this. It starts in the gill high up in the front side panel and runs steadily upwards via the door handle to the rear lights. It accentuates the elongated look of the body and, in conjunction with the door sill line, creates a dynamic wedge shape. Below the swage line, a character line, which likewise starts in the side gill, follows a downward trajectory initially and then runs parallel to the door sill line and on into the tail.

The precise interplay of lines and surfaces is most apparent in the rear wheel arch area. The powerful bulge directly above the rear wheels reduces the prominence of the contour line in this area, giving a sense of natural forces harnessed in a consistent and unified body design.

The alloy wheels specially designed for the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept again tie in closely with the sporty and exclusive character of this concept model. The 20-inch multispoke wheels are a one-off design milled from a solid aluminium block. The individual spokes have an elaborate three-dimensional design, with precisely defined contours and weight-reducing milled openings running parallel to the direction of travel.

Rear design: low visual centre of gravity and accent on width.
The rear styling is dominated by horizontal lines which, in conjunction with the wide track and wide wheel arch flares, accentuate the sense of width and the powerful stance of the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept. The shoulder areas protrude clearly in rear view, so that even from this angle there is no mistaking the athletic character of the vehicle. The slightly concave rear part of the boot lid, along with the bumper, the diffusor-style rear apron and all other elements of the rear end, are wide and low-slung. The visual centre of gravity is strikingly low and road-hugging - an effect that is generated mainly by a V-shaped line running from the sides of the boot lid down to the low-mounted numberplate surround.

The crease at the lower edge of the body wraps round from the sides of the Coup into the rear and finishes in the tailpipe surrounds, which are set well to the outside and enclose matt-polished trapezoidal exhaust tips. The low-rise, horizontally mounted reflectors, which have been removed to the bumper, likewise underline the sense of width in rear view.

The typical BMW L-shaped rear light clusters of the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept create a further visual link between the sides and the rear of the vehicle. They are split into two parts and extend into the boot lid. Inside the units, two LED light strips create the typical BMW night-time look. This effect is enhanced by the L-shaped lower light unit. The direction indicator, tail light and brake light are likewise LED-powered.

Interior: luxurious, avant-garde and stylish.
The BMW 6-Series Coup Concept has a full glass roof which lets a great deal of light into the interior of the 2+2-seater, highlighting the generous interior ambience and the light-touch interior design. Carefully selected materials, coupled with meticulous craftsmanship and build quality, underscore the luxurious character of the concept model, which combines exceptional sportiness with an extremely exclusive driving experience.

In the interior, too, the tone is set by fluent lines and harmonious surfaces. In the vicinity of the driver and front passenger, the design of the instrument panel, centre console and door trim stresses bold, dynamic surfaces and sculpted transitions, giving a sense of exclusive safety and security. At the rear, two comfortable single seats offer lavish headroom, legroom and shoulder room, providing first-class comfort even on long journeys.

The surfaces are defined by gently flowing lines which run throughout the interior, creating an effect reminiscent of rippling wave motion and evoking the impression of forward-thrusting dynamism.

Driver-centric design, harmonious integration of the centre console and instrument panel.
The BMW 6-Series Coup Concept's cockpit also takes the familiar BMW driver-centric design to new levels, in keeping with the distinctively sporty character of this concept model. The centre section of the instrument panel, featuring the iDrive Control Display, the central air vents and the audio and climate controls, is inclined slightly but visibly towards the driver. The electronic gear selector and the Drive Dynamic Control buttons are mounted on the driver's side of the front console. The front passenger side, meanwhile, which is slightly higher than the driver's side, sweeps up with a slight flourish into the upper part of the instrument panel. High-quality leather trim with double stitching in a contrasting colour accentuates the dynamic transition between the centre console and the instrument panel.

The forward-surging wave theme can also be seen in the contouring of the door panel trim, where the precise interplay between concave and convex surfaces produces a natural duality and tension. The window sill line extends in a gentle sweep into the instrument panel, guiding the eye towards the road. Below this, the door panelling is intersected by a trim component which links the front part of the passenger compartment with the rear. It starts at the rear window sill, then continues forwards and initially downwards, narrowing as it approaches the door panelling, then rising slightly and becoming wider again in the front part of the vehicle. This creates an upward sweep running through the window sill and into the instrument panel.

On the driver's side of the cockpit the eye is drawn to the black-panel instrument cluster. The traditional-style circular dials are generated electronically, using advanced display technology. At rest, all displays are invisible, only springing to life when the engine is started. Black-panel technology is also used for the audio and climate displays on the centre console. A galvanised strip draws a horizontal dividing line across the cockpit below the instrument cluster and also marks the lower edge of the central air vents. This line is then carried over on the front passenger side into a crease on the glove compartment.

Flatscreen-style Control Display and Head-Up Display.
The BMW 6-Series Coup Concept is equipped with the latest-generation iDrive control system as featured on current production models. That system's innovative principle of separating the control unit from the display is taken a stage further in this concept model. As before, the Controller - situated on the centre console - allows intuitive operation of vehicle-related, infotainment, navigation and telecommunications functions. However, the Control Display now for the first time takes the form of a freestanding 10.2-inch display with high-quality galvanised chrome surround. This display shows the various iDrive menus and options, the audio system status messages and the navigation maps.

The small depth of this high-resolution display gives it a flatscreen look, while the new positioning of the display - extending further into the passenger compartment - also impacts on the centre console, which appears to rise more steeply, accentuating the cockpit-style character of the instrument panel.

The iDrive operating system allows functions to be intuitively controlled with minimal driver distraction from the road and traffic. For additional convenience and safety, the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept is also fitted with a Head-Up Display. Developed by BMW, this system offers unique functionality and allows important driver information to be projected directly onto the windscreen in the driver's line of sight. For example, in addition to current vehicle speed, the Head-Up Display also shows status messages and warnings from the driver assistance systems, Check Control messages and navigation instructions - all without the driver having to take his eyes off the road.

Top-flight audio enjoyment: fully active car hi-fi system from Bang & Olufsen.
From the very first glance, the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept promises an outstandingly sporty and exclusive driving experience. Part of this experience is a hi-fi system that was developed specially for this concept model and sets new standards for in-car listening enjoyment. Designed by Danish car hi-fi specialists Bang & Olufsen and specially matched to the interior acoustics of this 2+2-seater, the hi-fi system produces unsurpassed in-car sound quality.

This superior audio experience comes courtesy of extra-high-quality system components - plus innovative sound control technology never before featured in a car hi-fi system.

The Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound System produces an exceptionally natural sound from 16 speakers distributed around the cabin. This is a fully active system, which means the two bass speakers, seven mid-range speakers and seven tweeters all have individual amplifiers. The electrical signals are converted into precisely defined sound waves using neodymium magnet drives which combine very high performance with low weight, making them the ideal solution for a car hi-fi system. The mid-range speakers also feature extremely stiff yet extremely lightweight Hexacone diaphragms.

The exceptional sound quality is due not only to vehicle-specific placement of high-quality speakers in the interior but also to innovative amplifier technology. Digital signal processing allows the signals to each speaker to be individually controlled. This technology compensates for any sound reflections inside the vehicle by means of appropriate signal modifications. The Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound System uses Dirac Dimensions technology to recreate the acoustics of a given "reference" listening environment in the passenger compartment. This prevents the inevitable closeness of vehicle passengers to the speakers from affecting the sound experience. Also, all vehicle occupants enjoy identical sound quality wherever they happen to be sitting. The signals are precisely tuned to give the impression that the speakers are actually outside the vehicle.

The outstanding quality of the Bang & Olufsen high-end surround sound system is accompanied by exclusive styling features. These include high-quality all-aluminium speaker grilles and, most notably, the new-design centre speaker in the instrument panel area. As soon as the audio system is activated, the mid-range speaker grille pops up automatically. At the same time the tweeter lens is extended and distributes sound evenly throughout the car.

In this concept model, the history and future of BMW coup s meet and intersect. Their superior dynamism - whether on the road or on the race track - and their stylish elegance mean that BMW coup s both of yesteryear and of today have a potent ability to arouse desires and inspire fantasies. The BMW 6-Series Coup Concept is very much in this traditional mould, and from the very first glance promises an exceptional driving experience. Its high-quality design, with its expressive and harmonious proportions and precisely sculpted surfaces, immediately evokes athleticism and assurance. At the same time, the flowing lines are an authentic expression of stylish elegance that extends to every part of the vehicle.

The interior, too, promises an exceptional driving experience. The innovative styling, with the emphasis on fluent lines, along with the high-grade materials and the meticulous craftsmanship and build quality, give the occupants of this 2+2-seater a sense of safety and security, while at the same time imbuing the ambience with a luxurious and avant-garde touch.

In addition, the BMW 6-Series Coup Concept features the technical highlights one would expect of a car of this exclusive status and high-quality engineering for which the world's most successful premium car manufacturer is noted. All-LED headlights with Adaptive Headlight technology are further proof of the pioneering character of this concept model, along with the Head-Up Display and the unique Bang & Olufsen high-end surround sound system. The BMW 6-Series Coup Concept sets new standards in dynamism, elegance, design and engineering, seamlessly building on the traditional qualities of BMW coup s of the past, while at the same time offering an innovative interpretation of the enduring fascination of legendary dream cars of yesteryear such as the BMW 3.0 CS.
