Senner Audi A6 4G 2013 Car Pictures

Senner Tuning from Ingelheim has released their latest tuning program for the Audi A6.

Senner Tuning has endowed the fancy oil burner from Ingolstadt with a comprehensive turning program and hiked the performance of the 3.0 TDI endine to 374 hp and rising the torque to 776 Nm.

They have constructed a classical KW Street Comfort coil-over kit with a lowering section between 30 and 55 mm to transmit this power to road surface.

Customers will have a choice to choose from the Varianza T1S wheel or the Sword SC1 work rims. Both are black front-polished rims and have external beds anodised to high gloss.

Porsche BTR-II 600 EVO Ultra Edition by SpeedART

Do you remember the 997 Turbo BTR-II 650 EVO SpeedArt unveiled back n 2010? Today the same tuner turned its attention to the BTR-II package one more time and came up with a new version. This time around, the kit is called BTR-II 600 EVO Ultra Edition and unfortunately, it is a little bit less powerful than the first edition, but one benefit it that the tuner applied the kit to a convertible model.

This tuning kit pushes the Porsche's engine to 600 horsepower - 50 horsepower less than the BTR-II 650 EVO model. To achieve this output level, the tuner installed its Powerkit III system, a sports exhaust system with a sound switch, 200-cell sports catalytic converter and 84 mm tailpipes. Peak torque was also increased to 590 pound-feet. This represents a significant increase over the base 500 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque delivered by the 997 Turbo.

Next to the extra power, the BTR-II 600 EVO Ultra Edition received an adjustable sport suspension with PASM and air lift for more ground clearance and a meaner appearance.

Dodge Journey

Kirby Garlitos

Dodge's attempt to re-inject some life to the Journey looks to have paid off with the 2013 model. Although that's not much of a stretch, given the mediocrity that plagued its past iterations, you have to give credit to Dodge for giving the Journey all the necessary tools - and then some - to be able to properly compete against a competitive market segment.

So, yeah, the 2013 Journey is a lot better than its past namesakes and while it still can't be considered a "class-leader," it's made huge enough strides to be treated with respect and attention.

The 2013 Journey's reasonably sporty feel, combined with impressive looks and refined interior makes it an SUV worth your time and money. And, oh by the way, it now comes with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that produces arguably one of the highest outputs of any SUV in its class.

For those looking to have a family-friendly SUV with a hidden thirst for power lurking underneath, the 2013 Journey is as good a choice as any.

BMW X1 M Sport sDrive28i

Posted on 08.5.2013 16:00 by
Tom Burkart

The BMW X1 is a fantastic addition to the Bimmer range, as well as to the TopSpeed Garage. During our week testing the M Sport X1 sDrive28i, the car won many friends with its driving environment, striking new-BMW styling crispness and a truly sports-car-like agility versus the larger X3.

The X1 is offered stateside in three trim levels across the turbo four-cylinder 28i and turbo six-cylinder 35i powerplants, with xDrive available across the range. The test car's X1 sDrive28i pairs the base engine with the top M Sport trim level at the top, bringing a beautiful body-color bumper treatment absent from the cheaper 'Sport' and 'X-line' trim packs. The M Sport option also includes a variety of other tasty upgrades, including sports leather seats and handsome special paint and wheel options.

The X1 fills such a successful gap in the entry-level BMW offering that it even caught Audi and Mercedes-Benz flatfooted, with their GLA250 and Audi Q3 competitors still at least a year from reaching American buyers.

The X1 certainly doesn't have the small premium crossover market to itself, but does carve a unique niche with few pretend off-road aspirations and a decidedly performance focus to its V-rated, 18-inch Pirelli's.

This road-going bias helps the X1 to be an agile and playful companion on any stretch of pavement, with a 60 mph sprint just above 6 seconds for both rear- and all-wheel-drive 28i four-cylinders and down to the low 5's for the potent X1 xDrive35i.

All this with a base price just above $30,000 means the X1 is the first affordable BMW entry for crossover shoppers, considering the Acura RDX or the Mini Cooper Countryman.

The full TopSpeed Garage drive review is past the jump, and takes a close look at the coolest performance options and features of the practical but sporty X1 sDrive28i M Sport.

Cadillac President hints at Rolls-Royce Ghost competitor by 2030

Cadillac President hints at Rolls-Royce Ghost competitor by 2030

Cadillac Elmiraj concept

Says CT6 will be priced in the $70k range

Cadillac President Johann de Nysschen has revealed the company could launch a Rolls-Royce Ghost competitor by 2030.

Speaking to Reuters, de Nysschen said "It is too early today for a $250,000 Cadillac" but "fifteen years from now, it won't be."

That's far more expensive than today's models but Cadillac is already trying to move up market. In particular, de Nysschen suggested the CT6 will be priced in the $70,000 range.

In previously interviews, he also confirmed a new range-topping model that will go head-to-head with long-wheelbase versions of the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class. That particular car is slated to be launched by 2020 and could be called either the CT8 or CT9.

Ford reveals 2015 F-150 fuel economy ratings

Ford reveals 2015 F-150 fuel economy ratings

2015 Ford F-150

The highly-anticipated fuel economy numbers are in for the 2015 Ford F-150.

While we've always known the model would be more fuel-efficient than its predecessor, it's finally official as Ford has confirmed the F-150 will have the "highest EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of any full-size gasoline pickup on the market."

Jumping right into the numbers, the entry-level model with the 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine - that produces 283 bhp (211 kW) and 255 lb-ft (345 Nm) of torque- will return an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city / 25 mpg highway / 20 mpg combined.

Moving up to the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine - with 325 bhp (242 kW) and 375 lb-ft (507 Nm) of torque - will reward buyers with an EPA-estimated rating of 19 mpg city / 26 mpg highway / 22 mpg combined.

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 develops 365 bhp (272 kW) and 420 lb-ft (568 Nm) of torque and will feature an EPA-estimated rating of 17 mpg city / 24 mpg highway / 20 mpg combined.

Last but not least, the 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 - with 385 bhp (287 kW) and 387 lb-ft (524 Nm) of torque - will return an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city / 22 mpg highway / 18 mpg combined.

Note: Fuel economy estimates for rear-wheel drive models

Update: An earlier version of this story suggested the charts could be interrupted as misleading since they compare the 2015 F-150 to the 2008 model but Ford Truck Communications Manager Mike Levine points out this was done because the average trade-in age is 7-8 years.

Black Ferrari F12 TRS spotted in Spain

Black Ferrari F12 TRS spotted in Spain

Ferrari F12 TRS spotted in Spain

Could this be the production version?

A black Ferrari F12 TRS has been spotted on the Circuito Monteblanco in south of Spain.

Back in June the one-off F12 TRS was revealed during the annual Ferrari Cavalcade driving tour in Sicily. The model was created through the Italian company's Special Projects division and featured a distinctive red paint job.

Interestingly, the vehicle recently photographed by Alberto Perez is finished in black. There’s no information whether this is another copy of the model, but more likely the original red car was only a prototype and this is the actual production version.

As a reminder, the F12 TRS sports a 6.3-liter V12 engine with 740 PS (544 kW) and 690 Nm (508 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the open-top car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.1 seconds before hitting a reported top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph).

Big chance of showdown crash in Abu Dhabi - Lauda

Big chance of showdown crash in Abu Dhabi - Lauda

Nico Rosberg (GER) leads Lewis Hamilton (GBR) / XPB

Niki Lauda has admitted it is possible Sunday's championship showdown will end with a crash.

Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have endured a tense relationship all season, they actually clashed at Spa and now the 2014 world champion will be decided in Abu Dhabi.

"The chance of a collision is great," admitted team chairman Lauda, "because it's the final blow in the title race. We could see some very risky overtaking manoeuvres.

"But we need to just accept the risk as we are letting them go free. But certainly the risk is much higher than before," the F1 legend added.

But Lauda also told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper that he hopes the warring duo will recognise the bigger picture and keep their battle clean on Sunday.

"Every driver knows that aggression like that can quickly end his own race," he said.

Lauda insisted, however, that it is no longer the team's role to sit the drivers down and urge them to drive sensibly.

"We are not going to interfere," he said.

"Fortunately there are no more third parties who can still be world champion, so now we have a showdown. Any admonition would be counterproductive.

"They should be free and able to do what they want to be world champion. I just hope we do well enough as a team to get through the race with both cars and no technical defects," Lauda added.

France Will Get its Own Top Gear Version

French fans of the British motoring show Top Gear will be happy to hear France will soon have its own version of the show hitting the airwaves. The show will come complete with three charming hosts and a helmeted Stig for laying down lap times.

The BBC, which will still run the show, recently announced the hosting duties will be done by Philippe Lelouche, Bruce Jouanny, and Yann Larret-Menezo. Each comes with their own whit, humor, and skills. As an actor and comic, race car driver, and journalist, the respective three will make the show unique to its French audience while still practicing the crazy antics that's made Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May's version of Top Gear such a huge success.

BBC Worldwide Productions France says the show will be aired on the RMC Decouverte channel and will begin this spring. Lets just hope Philippe, Bruce, and Yann are able to stay farther away from bad press than Jeremy Clarkson.

Top Gear France now joins the shows other worldwide versions, including those in the U.S., Australia, South Korea, and China.

Video: Ferrari 458 Italia "Refreshed" With a Sledgehammer

width="460" height="370" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Ht3oYiqCPPM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Luxury wheels manufacturer Forgiato sure has an inventive way of showing how indestructible its wheels are. I'm just not sure it had to go to the lengths it did to prove its point. Forgiato's latest ad is appropriately titled "Unbreakable," created to showcase how tough its wheels really are.

The premise of the ad revolves around a situation far too many couples find themselves in these days. A girl walks home to see her boyfriend/husband cheating with another girl. You know what they say: hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and that's no more true when said scorned woman is holding a sledgehammer.

From there, the ad devolves into the realm of cringe-worthy. The girlfriend, sledgehammer in hand, walks out of the house and decides to introduce her new toy with his prized ride, repeatedly driving the sledgehammer into a Ferrari 458 Italia. The damage on the 458 Italia, if its authentic and not CGI'd, isn't meant to be seen by the weak of heart.

But that's also where the hook of the commercial comes in.

After pummeling the hood, windshield, and body panels, the girlfriend makes a swing for the rear-left Forgiato wheel and... well...nothing happens to it.

As it turns out, it's unbreakable, so says Forgiato, even when struck by a sledgehammer.

Maybe next time, Forgiato gives that weapon to Hafthor Bjornsson. If the biggest man in Westeros can't break those wheels, then we'll buy what this ad is selling.

Noble M600 Drophead

It looks as if Noble is serious about creating a Drophead. Check out the details at TopSpeed.com.

First introduced in 2010, the Noble M600 is a low-production, rear-wheel-drive, mid-engine sports car built in Leicester, England. It's an expression of pure driving experience, with very little to offer it's passengers beyond a total immersion in speed. The only driving assists you'll find are a rudimentary traction control system and the fear of death. There isn't even ABS. The handling is hairy, taking a Stig-like touch to drive well, and mounted directly behind the driver is a 4.4-liter V8 with two turbochargers strapped to the exhaust manifolds, yielding a total 650 horsepower and 654 pound-feet of torque. At 2,645 pounds, that's a power-to-weight ratio of 541 horsepower per ton, a figure that bests even the mighty Bugatti Veyron. That means, properly motivated, the M600 can blast from a standstill to 60 mph in three seconds, run a standing quarter mile in 11 seconds flat, and hit a top speed of 225 mph.

Although it costs over $300 grand, the M600 has enjoyed enough success to encourage Noble to produce an update. For the past few years, the British carmaker has teased the idea of releasing a convertible M600. Now, according to the Dutch publication De Telegraaf, it appears as though that idea is coming to fruition.

Given the uncompromising nature of the M600, it should come as no surprise that Noble's managing director, Peter Boutwood, is a Ferrari F40 owner and former racing driver. In an exclusive interview with De Telegraaf, Boutwood said that Noble still plans on developing a drophead version of the M600. While an official date has not been announced, Boutwood confirmed that Noble is currently in the prototyping phase. Given the long development period required for the small Noble team to actually put an idea into production, a drivable M600 convertible might not appear for some time. We'll eagerly await the results.

Typically, when a roofless version of a sporty car is released, the overall performance is nerfed. With no metal at the top to hold it together, the chassis loses a substantial amount of torsional rigidity, which yields a serious penalty when it comes to cornering prowess. Automakers often attempt to fix this with addition bracing lower in the body, but that creates weight. And weight, if you didn't already know, is the sworn enemy of any performance measurement. It makes everything worse - acceleration, braking, lateral grip, even fuel mileage.

Given this fact, you may be shocked to hear that Noble is planning to chop the top on its hardcore, driver-oriented M600. The question remains: can Noble offer all that speed in a car with unlimited headroom?

Spy Shots: Porsche Cayman GT4 Caught Uncovered

It seems that the upcoming Porsche Cayman GT4 is extremely close to being reveled. Our latest spy shots of the new sports car have nary a sign of camouflage scattered across the bodywork. Although, I suppose after accidentally leaking that car does truly exist on its own website, Porsche decided it wasn't worth the effort to cover the machine in camo.

While we know the car is coming, and that it will be called the GT4, we don't know much about the new mid-engined machine. The engine will be more powerful, we are expecting upwards of 400 horsepower, making it the first time the car has ever eclipsed the 911, and other running gear like brakes and wheels are getting upgraded. The wheel design on this car is unique, and looks to be quite light. Hiding behind those massive rollers are larger brakes, and I suspect that a carbon-ceramic brake option will be on the table.

We don't know what kind of transmission will be on offer, but I am holding out hope that Porsche offers a manual. This year, Porsche moved the 911 GT3 exclusively to the PDK. I want the Cayman GT4 to be offered as a more traditional track toy with three pedals.

Visually there is little here that is new or unexpected. The nose has been made more aggressive with larger openings for better cooling, there is a small diffuser under the rear bumper, and then of course we have that massive wing. Our spy photos think that the wing will get some revisions before this car is debuted, but I am not sure if I agree with that. Be sure to sound off in the comments with your thoughts.

We will be sure to bring you a full, updated overview of the new Porsche Cayman GT4 just as soon as Porsche decides to make it officially official. Keep it locked to TopSpeed.com.

Mercedes GLK 350 4MATIC Schwarz Edition

Posted on 08.5.2013 18:00 by
Simona

The Japanese market has received lots of special attention from tuners in the past few months. After BMW launched a bunch of special-edition models, like the BMW M5 Nighthawk Edition, Mercedes decided it was its turn to develop some special models for Japan.

The first model it released was a rather boring B180 Northern Lights Black Special Edition, but now the maker wanted to make up for this lackluster model and came up with something pretty cool: this GLK 350 4MATIC Schwarz Edition.

The special model got its name from the German word for black, so it is pretty easy to imagine what the the dominant color is. The Schwarz Edition is painted in Obsidian Black, and features stainless-steel running boards and 20-inch wheels. AMG also tossed in a pretty cool styling package a new new sports suspension.

For the interior, the new GLK 350 4MATIC Schwarz Edition adds seats wrapped in a combination of Artico and Dinamica leather, a sport steering wheel, black ash wood trim and alloy pedals.

The new Mercedes GLK 350 4MATIC Schwarz Edition is limited to only 100 units and is priced at 6,840,000 or a little under $70k.

Spy Shots: Lamborghini Cabrera Out Testing

Lamborghini Gallardo's successor is rumored to arrive in a concept version at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, but it looks like the company is already testing the production version of the supercar. The car was recently caught testing in hot conditions and it's getting pretty clear that it will get an Aventador-inspired look. From the spy shots, we gather that the prototype will have dimensions similar to the Gallardo.

The successor to the Gallardo is rumored to carry the Cabrera name, which is, of course, the name of a famed Spanish bull. The new Cabrera will bring a series of new features and will be built on the same lightweight, carbon-fiber monocoque as the Aventador, which will make it about 60 pounds lighter than the current Gallardo.

Expect the production version of the Lamborghini Cabrera to be unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The coupe version will be followed by a a number of variants in the years thereafter, including Spyder and the Superleggera models.

Nissan says GT-R NISMO's rear end is bigger than Kim Kardashian's

Nissan says GT-R NISMOs rear end is bigger than Kim Kardashians

Kim Kardashian & Nissan GT-R Nismo

'Ours is bigger'

Nissan has issued a funny reply to Kim Kardashian's controversial photo(shopped) for the "Paper Magazine" cover.

The response was posted yesterday on the company's global official Twitter account showing the rear end of the 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO with the caption "ours is bigger" as a reply to Kim Kardashian's posterior reveal for the cover of "Paper Magazine."

We remind you the GT-R NISMO has an uprated V6 3.8-liter engine delivering a massive 600 HP (441 kW) and 481 lb-ft (652 Nm), enough for a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) run in less than three seconds. One last facelift is being prepared for the GT-R lineup and chances are the NISMO version will be included in the refresh as well.

2015 Ford Everest officially revealed [videos]

Based on the Ranger

Following last week's teaser, Ford has fully revealed the all-new Everest which is programmed to go on sale next year.

The 2015 Everest is based on the Ford Ranger from where it inherits the styling but with a more premium look both inside and out. Noticeable features include LED daytime running lights, aluminum front & rear underbody protection and a large chrome hexagonal front grille. It benefits from a generous 225mm ground clearance and 800mm water-wading capability while the towing capacity stands at 3,000 kg. Ford says it has a best-in-class 750 kg cargo payload (up to 100 kg roof payload) and a 29-degree approach angle and 25-degree departure angle.

The seven seater's cabin boasts more than 30 stowage spaces providing a combined 48 liters and by folding down the second and third rows you get 2,010 liters of cargo capacity. It comes equipped with the SYNC2 infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen display, two USB ports, 240-volt socket for the second row, 12-volt outlets in the front & second rows and trunk.

The 2015 Ford Everest packs a wide array of safety and assistance systems like Hill Start Assist, Hill Ascent & Descent & Curve Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Aid, Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Roll Stability Control and ESP.

In terms of engines, the SUV will be offered with a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter EcoBoost, along with a four-cylinder 2.2-liter Duratorq TDCi and a beefier five-cylinder 3.2-liter Duratorq TDCi which has an upgraded exhaust gas recirculation system for increased efficiency. Depending on engine selection, Ford is offering the 2015 Everest with six-speed automatic or manual transmissions.

Sales of the overhauled Everest are set to kick off sometime next year in China, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and markets across the ASEAN region.

Additional details are available in the press release below.

Skoda Fabia R5 teased ahead of November 29 reveal [video]

Debuts at Essen Motor Show

Skoda has released a teaser clip for their upcoming Fabia R5 set to be unveiled on November 29.

The Fabia S2000 has been phased out and now Skoda's motorsport division is concentrating on the R5 version which is based on the recently introduced third-gen Fabia supermini. Technical details about the rally car have not been provided at this point but the video shows a camouflaged version equipped with a beefier body with a roof scoop, raised suspension, rally-spec wheels and a central exhaust system.

Based on FIA's R5 regulations, the Fabia rally version will get a four-cylinder 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and a four-wheel drive system. Another condition is to have a minimum weight of 1,230 kg (2,711 lbs) and chances are the Fabia R5 will make use of a sequential gearbox.

We will know for sure on November 29 when the rally car will be introduced at the Essen Motor Show, ahead of next year's racing debut in the WRC-2 series.

2016 Audi A4 hides its sharper design in latest spy shots

2016 Audi A4 hides its sharper design in latest spy shots

2016 Audi A4 spy photo / Automedia

Appears to be bigger

Our spies have sent us a fresh batch of images depicting the all-new Audi A4 undergoing testing while wearing the production body.

Those of you who were hoping for a more differentiated design for Audi's upcoming A4 (B9) will be disappointed as the camouflaged prototype seen here adopts an evolutionary look with sharper lines in the same vein as yesterday's Q7 spy shots. Styling aside, it appears Audi's former entry-level sedan will be bigger in order to distance itself from the A3 Sedan and as a consequence it will have a longer wheelbase granting additional cabin room, especially in the back.

Technical details are scarce at this moment but chances are the overhauled Audi A4 will use the MLB Evo platform which should enable a considerable diet of approximately 220 lbs (100 kg). One of the engines rumored to be offered is a 1.4 TFSI equipped with a cylinder deactivation system capable of shutting off two of the cylinders in 36 milliseconds during low and medium loads as a measure to reduce fuel consumption by 0.5 liters / 100 km.

Later on during the A4's lifespan, we should also expect to see a plug-in hybrid variant mixing up a 211 bhp 2.0 TFSI with a 95 bhp electric motor which should grant the more frugal A4 with an electric range of 50 km (31 miles).

The revamped Audi A4 will be introduced sometime next year and will once again spawn an allroad variant.

Renault 'not interested' in going back to V8 - Wolff

Renault not interested in going back to V8 - Wolff

Renault Sport logo / XPB

Toto Wolff has hit back at claims F1 is heading into a spending war because of Mercedes' attitude amid the engine 'unfreeze' debate.

Christian Horner, the boss at Renault works team Red Bull, said in Brazil that because dominant Mercedes is not helping F1's struggling suppliers to catch up, the entire cost-limiting freeze could be ended altogether beyond 2015.

"With a majority vote, 2016/17/18 can be opened," he said, "which is ridiculous because we will all end up spending a lot more money over a longer period of time."

Horner's Mercedes counterpart Wolff, however, clearly suspects Horner is applying pressure and making threats that are not likely to be carried through.

"No serious company would allow that to happen and none of the current engine suppliers could allow that to happen because costs would escalate totally out of control," he said.

Wolff even claimed he knows that Red Bull's works supplier, Renault, does not want the engine 'freeze' to be totally relaxed.

"Where Mercedes and Renault are currently 100 per cent aligned is that with the current V6 technology it is state of the art, road relevant and is the future," he insisted.

Wolff suggested Horner's other threat - that F1 might be better off reverting to cheaper and more performance-equalised V8 engines - is also empty.

His comments follow Niki Lauda's warning that if the V8s do return, "Mercedes will be gone".

"If we drop the current format," Wolff confirmed, "I can assure you certain manufacturers like Renault and Mercedes would not be interested in supplying any other power unit."

Audi A1 facelift revealed with 3-cylinder engines

Audi A1 facelift revealed with 3-cylinder engines

Audi A1 facelift

Comes with retuned suspension

Following the refreshed Audi A6 and Audi Q3, the German brand has unveiled a facelift for its A1 and A1 Sportback models.

The vehicles have received new front grille and headlights graphics and new paint combinations. The interior benefits from the latest MMI infotainment control system and a Wi-Fi hotspot function.

The key updates are under the hood where new 3-cylinder diesel and petrol engines will be available. A 1.0-liter petrol unit with 95 bhp (71 kW) will be offered for the base variants, while diesel fans can opt for a 1.4-liter common-rail diesel with 90 bhp (67 kW) with average fuel consumption of 4.3 liters per 100 km (65.7 mpg)

Next in the lineup is a 1.4-liter direct injection petrol unit with 123 bhp (92 kW) or 148 bhp (110 kW) with the more powerful featuring a cylinder deactivation system. A 1.6 diesel with 114 bhp (85 kW) and 1.8 petrol with 189 bhp (141 kW) are also in the list.

The range-topping S1 and S1 Sportback will be powered by the familiar 2.0-liter TFSI engine that produces 231 bhp (172 kW). Thanks to it, the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration takes 5.8 and 5.9 seconds respectively.

The manufacturer has also retuned the suspension with optional adaptive damping available, as well as the Drive Select function that allows drivers to change the characteristics of the steering, damping, gearbox and throttle mapping.

2013 VW Golf Mk7 Review

2013 VW Golf Mk7

The next 2013 VW Golf Mk7 may be your first choice for 2013 s biggest launch. VW's new MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) architecture has made its production debut in the 2012 Audi A3, but it's the next Golf that will be the mass-market litmus test of the new modular platform.

The new family of EA211 TSI petrol engines are dimensionally very similar but easily configurable to produce different levels of power. No tricks have been missed when it comes to cutting weight here either. The aluminium blocks are 16kg lighter and other major parts have been lightened too, so the 1.4-litre comes in at 22kg lighter than its EA111 predecessor. The new 1.2-litre engines produce 85PS and 105PS with 121lb ft and 129lb ft torque. The 1.4-litre gives 122PS and 140PS with 148lb ft and 184lb ft torque.

Exhaust manifolds are cast as one into the cylinder head so the engines are extremely compact. They get a dedicated cooling circuit and the main engine has two cooling loops, top and bottom, to extract maximum efficiency. There are no fancy, twin-scroll turbochargers, simple, single scroll compressors do the job saving weight and cost. Making its debut in the 140PS, 1.4-litre is equipped, ACT (active cylinder management) shuts down cylinders two and three.

Two-cylinder mode works between 1,300rpm and 4,000rpm and when producing between 18lb ft and 74lb ft torque. That equates to steady, constant speed driving and at around 30mph 2013 VW Golf Mk7 claims a saving of 1-litre of fuel every 60 miles. According to a senior engineer I spoke to, it's active for 75 percent of the time in the EU test cycle.

The new Euro 6 EA288 TDIs are just as advanced. 1.6 and 2.0-litres in capacity, total emissions are reduced by as much as 45 percent with CO2 alone down seven percent. Power output is 90PS and 190PS respectively, the engines producing between 184lb ft and 280lb ft torque. Overall, diesel performance of 2013 VW Golf Mk7 is up compared to the previous generation from 12 to 26 percent depending on the configuration.

2012 Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TDI

2012 Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TDI

The 2012 Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TDI is a five-passenger midsize SUV with a rich relative-the Porsche Cayenne. The 2012 Volkswagen Touareg is available in four models: Sport, Lux, Executive, and Hybrid. Sport and Lux models offer a choice between a 280-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 engine or a 225-horsepower, 3.0-liter TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) V6, Executive models are powered by the 3.6-liter V6, and Hybrid models feature a supercharged, 3.0-liter V6 paired with a 47-hp electric motor for a combined power output of 380 horsepower. All Volkswagen Touareg powertrains are matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.

The 2012 Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TDI range includes four engines, but at 60k apiece, the thirsty 3.0 V6 hybrid and 4.2 TDI V8, are of minor interest. For most UK buyers, it's a choice between two 3.0-litre diesels. The basic motor produces 201bhp and does 62mph in 9sec but we splashed out 1615 on the 242bhp version that lops 1.2sec from that standing start time for a meagre 1mpg penalty. And speaking of mpg, its claimed 39mpg combined fuel figure is nearly 10mpg better than my old Range Rover Sport diesel's, thanks to a kerbweight some 400kg lower.

Common sense suggests we should have gone for the basic SE spec: heated leather trim, navigation, Bluetooth and an eight-speed 'box are all standard for 40,155. There's an off-road-themed Escape version too, but to sample the version most UK buyers will choose, we stumped up another 2525 for the sporty Altitude. The colour palette is about as varied as food choices in a 1970s Warsaw supermarket, but the metal-look dash trim does differentiate it from the warmer wood decoration of the SE.
