A new report indicates Mercedes-Benz is working on a compact G-Class-based SUV that will be released in September 2019.

Dubbed the GLB, the model will likely be built upon the company’s next-generation MFA2 architecture. The SUV is said to be light, stiff, flexible and cheap to produce and will offer seating for up to seven people. Car Magazine explains the character of the car is “a charming mix of G-Class visuals, B-Class proportions and GLA-Class dynamics”.

According to our source, the X247 codenamed model will receive three-cylinder engines from Renault in its entry-level versions. More powerful variants will be equipped with a 2.0-liter diesel and petrol units with power ranging from 204 bhp (152 kW) to 272 bhp (203 kW). The range-topping GLB45 AMG will likely receive a 380 bhp (284 kW) twin-turbo engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission.
