Although Mercedes-Benz is usually thought of as a premium luxury brand, which it primarily is, the three pointed star also has a quite successful motorsports program. During the 2014 Formula 1 season, Mercedes-Benz dominated the pole with both it's cars securing the top 2 overall spots with drivers Lewis Hamilton taking the top spot and Nico Rosberg taking second place. They also have a successful GT3 program with the Black Falcon SLS GT3 winning the Nurburgring 24 hour race in 2013. Now Mercedes-Benz is going to release the replacement for the SLS GT3 at the 2015 Geneva International Auto Show with the AMG GT3.
Mercedes-Benz recently made the announcement that they will be debuting the AMG GT3 at Geneva in March. Although they were scarce on the details of the new racecar, they did release a couple of cropped teaser sketches that previews what the car will look like. The sketch reveals that it will have a massive rear wing, most likely made out of carbon fiber, to provide downforce for those driven wheels, as well as a revised rear bumper designed for better airflow. Unfortunately, Mercedes has cropped the front of the car so we will have to wait until the big reveal at Geneva to see what the whole car looks like. As the new AMG GT3 is engineered to comply with FIA GT3 racing regulations, expect there to be canards on the front bumper to help with front downforce as well as flared fenders for the widened track.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is the second car, after the SLS, to be engineered in-house by the AMG division of Mercedes-Benz. Furthermore, this will be the second car to be released into what Mercedes calls it's "customer sport programme" aimed at selling racecars to customers with full manufacturer support behind them.
