2013 Maserati Quattroporte engine details revealed

2013 Maserati Quattroporte

Debuts next month in Detroit

Maserati has revealed additional information about the 2013 Quattroporte, including engine lineup.

When Maserati published the first photos with the new Quattroporte a month ago they were a little skimp on details, but now via MotorTrend we know what's hiding underneath that stylish hood.

The base engine is a Pentastar V6-based, twin-turbo direct-injection 3.0-liter with 404 hp (301 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) at 1,750 rpm. It's enough for a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 177 mph (285 km/h).

Maserati will also offer a more powerful V8 twin-turbo direct-injection 3.8-liter with 523 hp (390 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 479 lb-ft (649 Nm) or 524 lb-ft (710 Nm) with overboost at 2,000 rpm. With this engine, the Quattroporte rockets to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and will keep on accelerating until it reaches 191 mph (307 km/h).

Both engines will be manufactured by Ferrari and linked exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission which is lighter than the previous six-speed gearbox. V8 models will be sold only with RWD, while the V6 variant will be offered for the first time with an AWD system co-developed with Magna. Under normal driving this all-wheel drive system sends 100 percent of power to the rear axle, but if necessary it can transfer up to half of that to the front wheels.

The 2013 Maserati Quattroporte is 207.2 inches (5263mm) inches long, 76.7 inches (1948mm) wide and has a 124.8 inch (106.7mm) long wheelbase. This makes it 6.4 inches (163mm) longer and 2.5 inches (64mm) wider than the outgoing model. Since the wheelbase has grown by 4.2 inches, expect more rear legroom.

By using more aluminum in the body and chassis, the new Quattroporte has lost up to 220 lbs (100 kg) of weight. The V6 variant has a curb weight of about 4,101 lbs (1,860 kg), while its V8 sibling weighs 4,189 lbs (1,900 kg).

The car is riding on an all-new Skyhook suspension featuring front control arms, adjustable dampers and a rear multilink. It benefits from a speed-sensitive hydraulic steering system developed by TRW.

We will have full details in January at the 2013 NAIAS in Detroit.
