Company is also considering a redesigned infotainment system

Mercedes is still rolling out new S-Class variants but details are starting to emerge about the next-generation model which will reportedly be launched in 2018.

In an interview with Auto Express, Mercedes’ chief interior designer Jan Kaul confirmed the company is working on gesture controls which would enable drivers to access certain functions by using hand gestures. Kaul declined to go into specifics but said we'll see gesture recognition technology "soon."

The designer also revealed Mercedes could integrate the infotainment system into the digital instrument cluster. Audi introduced a similar system on the 2015 TT but Kaul said "We only do things because they are right for us, not because our rivals do."

Kaul also revealed we can expect to see single-piece trim fittings and lightweight one-piece seats in the future.
