2014 Mazda3 spied for the first time

2014 Mazda3 skyactiv

Mazda might have some of the most original products on the market, but they are also a small company compared to other Japanese giants like Toyota, Nissan or Honda.

Last year, they put most of their eggs in one basket and released the Skyactiv family of engines and transmissions, together with two new models, the 6 midsize sedan and CX-5 crossover.

Both have received great reviews and sold well, which allows Mazda to invest in something else. Leaving its old Ford shell behind, they've now begun work on the first non-Focus version of the 3 compact hatchback.

Even though it's heavily camouflaged, we can still tell the new Mazda3 uses the Kudo design language.

The Mazda3 was never a bad looking car, but with a lighter chassis and more power on tap, it promises to be even more fun to own and drive than before.

The engine of engines will probably be borrowed from the MX-5, though Mazda has promised us small turbo units as well. This prototype has two exhausts, something only available on the MPS (MazdaSpeed) model today. However, it's more likely the prototype is using the high-output 2.2-liter turbodiesel.

While the current model is built in Japan, Mazda3 production will likely move to Mexico next year. Look for a reveal to take place at this year's Tokyo Auto Show.
