Mercedes working on a GL Coupe - report

2014 Mercedes GL 63 AMG

Could be launched in 2016

Mercedes is reportedly developing a new GLC (GL Coupe) to battle the Audi Q8 and BMW X7.

Set to go into production in 2016, the model is expected to be a five-door crossover with a rakish roofline that could echo the CLS Shooting Brake. The GLC could also be equipped with new bumpers, revised headlights, a distinctive grille and an upgraded interior.

Engine options remain unconfirmed but speculation suggests there will be a variety of petrol and diesel powertrains which will be paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Little else is known about the model but it is expected to be built at the company's Tuscaloosa plant in the United States. This means the GLC would be built alongside the MLC which is slated for a 2015 launch.
