Volvo planning nomenclature changes, next S80 to become S90

2010 Volvo S80 facelift

XC70 will be V90 Cross Country

Volvo's vice president in charge of large cars has announced a series of naming changes for upcoming models.

The second generation XC90 is only a taste of what's to come in Volvo's overhauled lineup as all models will get replacements within the next three years. Dennis Nobelius, a Volvo vice-president of the "Vehicle Line 90" model program has announced several moniker changes for upcoming models, with the most important one being the next-gen S80 set to use the S90 designation.

In addition, the all-new V70 will be renamed V90 while the next XC70 is going to be commercialized under the V90 Cross Country nameplate. Dennis has also disclosed plans of a long wheelbase S90 which will be sold exclusively in China with the S90 L denomination.

All these models will be powered by Volvo's brand new four-cylinder Drive-E engines and will ride on the Scalable Product Architecture which has nothing in common with Ford. Volvo says the S90, S90 L, V90 and V90 Cross Country will be introduced within the next two years.
