Three More A45 AMG-Based Models Under Development

Posted on 02.15.2013 15:00 by
Simona

Now that we have officially seen the new A45 AMG sports hatch, it looks like Mercedes has three more A45 AMG-based models in the works, all of them are rumored to be unveiled at major shows in the upcoming months.

The first to arrive will be an AMG version for the new CLA-Class. It will arrive at the New York Auto Show and will be followed by the GLA45 AMG and the CLA Shooting Brake.

All three models will be powered by the same engine used in the A45 AMG: a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 360 horsepower and a peak torque of 331 pound-feet. Also, performance figures will be pretty much identical: 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The only model to be a little bit slower will be the GLA45 AMG due to its added weight.

Just five days ago, Codemasters unveiled the first trailer for the GRID 2 - a new racing game taking aim at games like Gran Turismo 5 or Forza 4. The problem is that the first teaser video was only a few seconds long and offered almost no details on the game.

Today, Codemasters released a new trailer video, one that's a little bit longer and shows a few more details of the new game. Still, do not expect to learn much more by watching this new video, but we did indeed spot some supercars not shown in the first trailer and some really cool action.

This video shows cars like McLaren MP4-12C, Mercedes Benz SL 65 AMG and Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition racing around the Arc de Triumph in Paris, and sports cars like Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 Nismo Z Tune, Pagani Huayra and Koenigsegg Agera R racing on the streets of Chicago.

The brand new 2012 Jaguar XFR

2012 Jaguar XFR images

This 2012 Jaguar XFR is one finely dressed assassin. With elegant white paint that shines and looks sporty and a dark, leather-laden interior, this XFR is spot-on as to how I would spec out a Jaguar-if I ever have the means to acquire one.

I was supremely impressed with the cabin, which has pleasing touch points everywhere. I mean, everywhere. The leather on the doors, the headliner and the white stitching made a Mercedes-Benz that I drove recently look pedestrian. Add in the carbon-fiber veneer that bisects the dash, and you have one stately interior. It’s hard not to like a sinister, jet-black interior in an athletic-endeavoring luxury sedan. It makes the correct statement that this is expensive, but it’s there to be driven. Just in comfort.

Speaking of that, dialing up dynamic mode from a button in the center console adds a bit more response to the car, though it’s fine in the base setting. This supercharged V8 is a rocket, achieving irrational speeds effortlessly. The transmission is generally smooth, though the kickdowns can be a touch unsettling. With tornado warnings in the area on the night I piloted this Jag, the ground was generally wet, which meant some outrageously fun tire spinning for me.

The XFR is a big car, and it handles well. Personally I like large, rear-wheel-drive sedans, so this luxury liner’s dynamics are tailored my tastes. I’ve been impressed with Jag’s styling, with the raked C-pillar, subtle curves and elegant styling cues such as the quarter-panel vents and tasteful yet bold grille. This is a smart, contemporary look for Jaguar. Add in the dark wheels, and you have a sporty look with a slight sinister streak.

The negatives? It does enjoy fuel. And the electronics can be a bit challenging to pick up during a one-night stint, though I did figure out the climate and audio expeditiously enough.

2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid First Drive

New Porsche Panamera S Hybrid

It’s the quietest Porsche sports car I’ve ever driven, but that doesn’t mean it’s the slowest.

Unplug any thought you may have that hybrid vehicles are painfully slow and uninspiring to drive; the 2012 Panamera S Hybrid will short-circuit that notion.

The gas/electric four-door Porsche is a highly sophisticated machine that won’t let performance enthusiasts down. Heck, it’s capable of 0-100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and 80-120 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. These specs are cited by Porsche, along with a top speed of 270 km/h.

When one considers the size of the Panamera and its four-door architecture, the performance numbers are impressive, especially considering that the core powerplant is a supercharged 3.0L V6 gas engine. Perhaps more impressive is the vehicle’s ability to conserve the black gold in its tank.

The Panamera S Hybrid is rated at 8.6L/100km and 6.8L/100km, city and highway driving respectively. While fuel economy ratings are often artificial and near impossible to achieve by the average driver, such wasn’t my experience with this week’s tester.

So let’s not kid ourselves about ability to pay. Folks buying a $127,395 (as tested) Porsche aren’t likely bereft of funds to fuel it. For them, the motivation to go hybrid may be more altruistic than economic. Regardless of reason, it’s a good thing.

I was quite surprised at how effectively I could maximize the potential of the Panamera’s hybrid technology. After a dose of seat time to get accustomed to the system’s operational characteristics, I learned when to lay off the throttle and allow electrical propulsion to take over. And it wasn’t necessary to slow to a crawl to maintain the spark.

The Panamera S Hybrid can move along at low highway speeds for short durations on purely electric power. The driver can also select E-Power, which aids in the exclusive use of electrical propulsion. I found this a great way to drive cost-free the six or so blocks of side streets that lead to my home.

While my average economy was all over the map due to pushing the hybrid Panamera for performance purposes and alternately babying it for economy testing, I was still capable of matching the posted city consumption rating of 8.6L/100km.

Part of the push in economy belongs to the vehicle’s 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. The vast selection of gearing enables the Panamera S Hybrid to match the most efficient gear to the immediate needs, whether gentle cruising or full-on track duty.

The track isn’t where one expects a hybrid-powered vehicle to excel, yet I can verify the competency of Porsche’s hybrid in such an octane-doused setting. Its combined output of 380 hp is notable, but what really delivers the goods post apex is the car’s massive 428 lb-ft of combined torque.

A few months back, I wrote this comment following my track day with the Panamera S Hybrid: "I’m sure more than a few drivers were surprised to see the big four-door hybrid sled filling their rear-views". Yes, there were a lot of exotic machines on Mission Raceway’s road course that day – including an Italian tour de force – yet the electric/gas four-door from Germany more than held its own.

Activating the Panamera’s Sport and Sport Plus modes keeps the gas engine more in the game, ensuring that it constantly contributes to motivation rather than shutting down when it normally would. For everyday driving, though, the gas/electric combo functions fairly seamlessly.

Allied with its dual power sources, the Panamera S Hybrid exhibits two distinct personalities; one oriented toward power and performance, while the other favours luxury and comfort.

The car rides with a pleasing degree of decorum. The driver can opt to firm up the damping, but there seems to be little reason to do so; the Panamera corners with exceptional accuracy and control without engaging the Sport or Sport Plus modes.

Still, the performance purists will appreciate the ability to alter the big car’s persona at the touch of a button, especially when taking it to the stallions at the track.

One aspect of the Panamera S Hybrid that does require a little more finessing to perfect than with the conventional version is brake function. As with all regenerative brake setups, the Panamera’s can be slightly more difficult to operate smoothly and modulate intuitively.

The 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid is every bit a Porsche despite the absence of a howling Porsche exhaust note. This Stuttgart-derived ride is more grown-up than its pure-octane siblings yet highly capable by every measure, and surprisingly effectual when the yardstick is measuring fuel economy, and by extension, CO2 emissions.

2025 car to be 2,600 USD more expensive due to meeting fuel economy goals (US)

 2025 car to be 2,600 USD more expensive due to meeting fuel economy goals (US)

2010 Honda Insight window sticker

Targeting a 54.5 mpg fleet average

Buying a new car in 2025 will be 2,600 USD more expensive than it was in 2011, according to an EPA engineer.

Even if carmakers will reach the federally-mandated fleet average of 54.5 mpg, EPA engineer Jeff Alson says we probably won't have this mpg figure on the sticker of a regular midsize car in 2025. For that year regulators are expecting a real-world average fuel economy of approximately 40 mpg, up by about 20 mpg compared to 2010.

Americans will continue to prefer gasoline because car manufacturers will be able to make traditional engines more efficient through various technologies. During a speach given at University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, Jeff Alson said a 2025MY will cost 2,600 USD more than a 2011MY if the industry will opt for the "most cost-effective" way to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards.

He also made a few interesting projections, saying new cars will be 8 percent lighter by 2025. He also believes more than 90 percent of 2025MY cars will have direct-injection, turbocharging and gasoline engines. Two percent of the market will be made up by electric or semi-electric models, while five percent will be gas-electric hybrids.

Mild hybrids (stop/start system and/or with battery-powered supplemental propulsion) will represent 26 percent of the entire new vehicle market by 2025. Lastly, most cars will have 8-speed gearboxes.

Carlsson CK63 RSR

With 700 HP

Carlsson has revised its upgrade program for the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG.

The CK63 RSR will be making its appearance at the Geneva Motor Show next month and will bring its 700 HP (515 kW) along. The power is available at 5,700 rpm while the electronically-limited 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft) is there between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. It does the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 3.9 seconds and hits 211 mph (340 km/h).

Among modifications we mention a custom high-performance stainless steel exhaust with catalytic convertors and an electronically-controlled sound valve for a proper soundtrack. The CK63 RSR has specially made coil-overs and sits 30mm lower than the standard car.

It can be fitted with 19- or 20-inch alloys, while the front track is widened by 25mm. Braking is done thanks to the 405 mm front vented discs with six-pot calipers and at the back retains the standard AMG brakes but with better pads.

It also comes with an electrically retractable rear spoiler, carbon fiber front spoiler lip and black stainless steel mesh inserts in the rear carbon valance insert, intake grilles and braking cooling intakes.

2014 Acura MDX Prototype With Front-Wheel Drive

2014 Acura MDX Prototype

At the Montreal International Auto Show, Acura gave Canadian media their first look at two vehicles that will help redefine Canadians’ expectations of what a luxury car can be.

Making its Canadian debut, the 2014 Acura MDX Prototype evokes strength and excitement and once again raises the bar in the luxury SUV category it created. Utilizing “Aero Sculpture” design language impacting form and function, the 2014 MDX Prototype features alluring proportions with smooth, arching body lines matched to an efficient architecture. The new MDX will feature a new direct-injected 3.5 litre V-6 engine that will deliver improved torque and expected class-leading fuel economy.

“Since its introduction, and with every new generation, the MDX has redefined what an SUV can be,” said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president, Acura Canada. “In true Acura fashion, this next model will take the current MDX’s inspired performance and move the needle further by improving fuel economy, luxury and comfort. It’s a very exciting time for the Acura brand and we’re looking forward to continuing the momentum from 2012 into 2013.”

Also making its first Canadian appearance was the all-new 2014 Acura RLX – the most powerful, spacious, and technologically-advanced Acura sedan ever. Utilizing an all-new direct-injection engine, lightweight body structure and the first-ever application of Acura Precision All-Wheel Steer , the 2014 RLX delivers a new and dynamic driving experience unlike that of any other luxury performance sedan. Inside, the RLX also features the Canadian introduction of the AcuraLink connectivity system, which delivers a wealth of communication and entertainment features.

“This RLX achieves our goal of beautiful, timeless design with flowing lines that make a statement from any angle,” said Chenkin. “Like the new ILX, RDX and MDX, this new RLX represents Acura’s return to setting new standards in the luxury market.”

The only real change, traction-wise, is that for the first time the MDX will be available in a front-wheel-drive format. This comes in response to requests from Sun Belt dealers.

Otherwise, the '14 MDX gets a full facelift. Its new "Aero Sculpture" styling not only looks good but also improves aerodynamic efficiency by up to 16 percent.

It will be shorter by 1.5 inches and ride on a longer wheelbase, which should enhance ride quality and boost cabin and cargo space. A new chassis is lighter and more rigid and new front and rear suspension designs are expected to produce in a sportier ride-and-handling package.

There's a new engine, a 3.5-liter V-6 that's expected to produce more torque while improving fuel efficiency to class-leading levels.

Acura will load the MDX with a host of safety technologies and expect to see the next generation of Acura's cloud-based AcuraLink connectivity initiative.

2013 Porsche Cayman S tested at Hockenheim hits 290 km/h [video]

Although official top speed is 283 km/h

Test drive editor Christian Gebhardt from Sport Auto has recently tested the 2013 Porsche Cayman S at Hockenheim.

Even though Porsche says the Cayman S has a top speed of 283 km/h (176 mph), Christian was able to hit 290 km/h (180 mph) and probably could have gone all the way up to 300 km/h (186 mph). This is possible thanks to a flat six 3.4-liter engine producing 325 HP (239 kW) which sends the car to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds.

Basically a Boxster S coupe, the new Cayman S will go on sale next month in Europe with pricing in Germany beginning at 64,118 EUR (including VAT). United States will get the car in spring from 63,800 USD.

Lamborghini to unveil front mid-engined concept in Geneva - report

 Lamborghini to unveil front mid-engined concept in Geneva - report

Lamborghini Estoque Concept

Not based on Aventador

Lamborghini will reveal in Geneva a new V12-powered concept which might be front mid-engined.

In Geneva we shall see not only "the fastest car Lamborghini has ever produced”, but also "something truly extraordinary that's based on the V12." The concept will not be based on the Aventador and will have two seats and two doors, according to the firm's chairman Stephan Winkelmann.

It is speculated that Lamborghini is previewing a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta rival by introducing a front mid-engined concept which will feature the company's forged carbon construction and four-wheel drive system.

Winkelmann mentioned his priority right now is to convince the big boys at VW Group to green-light the Urus. He is confident Lamborghini will be able to sell between 3,000 and 4,000 units annually and if approved for production, the SUV will cost "approximately the same amount as a Gallardo" so it will be priced between 190,000 USD and 250,000 USD.

Winkelmann said the company's sports cars will remain naturally aspirated, but a "hybrid turbo would make more sense" in reference to an SUV.

Volvo’s On Call Smart Phone App Keeps Driver And Car Connected

Volvo’s On Call Smart Phone App Keeps Driver And Car Connected

By Mark McNabb on Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

In this day in age, we're keeping up with everything on our smart phones, staying connected via social media like Facebook, and collaborating with others by crowdsourcing for ideas.

Volvo has taken these trends and somehow rolled them into their On Call application for iOS, Android, and Windows devices.

Owners of properly equipped late model Volvos can view vital information about their vehicle like fuel level, current location, odometer and trip meter readings, maintenance issues, and security status - even items like windshield washer fluid levels and what bulbs are burnt out.

If an owner forgets where they parked, for instance, they can simply launch the On Call app, locate the car, get directions, and even have the car running and warmed up when they arrive. For all of us OCD owners out there, you can even check that the doors are locked.

While the On Call app works well, Volvo knows improvements can always be made. They're now taking to Facebook for user-generated ideas and suggestions to make the app even better.

2013 Buick LaCrosse Review

2013 Buick LaCrosse Review

By Christian Moe on Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Buick has been going through a bit of a resurgence lately. After years of disappointing products and nearly being shuttered by GM during their bankruptcy and restructuring, Buick has been creating a full suite of competitive vehicles into the market. We decided to take the current flagship sedan, the Buick LaCrosse for a spin to see if Buick really has upped their game.

When it comes to looks, the LaCrosse is leagues ahead of the previous Buick offerings. We are really digging the new squat styling and stout proportions. The sharp lines on the front combine with the waterfall grille and HID headlamps to provide a commanding face. The side profile features chrome trim across the beltline and the bottom of the doors. A character line swoops gracefully downward until the rear door where it swoops it back up across the rear fender. The rear finishes with chrome trim on the LED taillamps and the trunk. The tail also features integrated exhaust outlets with chrome trim, giving a nice finished look.

Gallery2013 Buick LaCrosse Review

The interior of GM products have been the butt of all jokes, and universally disdained. They always managed to tread the fine accountant's line, forever disregarding any thoughts of ergonomics, or quality. There have been great strides lately, but the LaCrosse has to be one of the best efforts yet. The design features a double cockpit design with lots of leather and wood slathered on everything. We really enjoyed the tan and gray color scheme of the whole interior. We do get bored of the dark interiors most luxury cars are given. The interior has also been treated with a nice ambient light treatment in which many of the edges and seams of the trim pieces glow with a soft blue light. It looks very futuristic and we found it mildly soothing.

Soothing is actually a very good term for the LaCrosse. The entire machine feels like it was built to move things from point A to point B with nothing in between but marshmallows. The ride is very soft and coddling, and the leather seats are well cushioned. Buick says they are trying to attract younger buyers, but the LaCrosse still feels built for an older generation than my own.

If there is one redeeming feature of the way the Buick drives, it's the engine. Our tester came packaged with the 3.6-liter V6, putting 303 horsepower and 264 lb/ft of torque at the call of my right foot. With a FWD drivetrain this can make for some fun, but the big Buick doesn't exhibit as much torque steer as you might expect. We also have to give major kudos to the suspension engineering team; this big floaty boat doesn't understeer nearly as bad as you would expect, not that it's a canyon carver by any stretch.

This overall "meh" experience is a great way to sum up my entire time with the LaCrosse. It was never a bad car, but it was also never a great one. I could never find anything about the car that really made me want it, and it wasn't for a lack of trying. To give this Buick the best chance to woo me, I loaded up the wife and a few bags and headed off on a road trip. We were headed to visit family in Wilmington, NC; a near 500 mile trip. I thought the miles of long open interstate would help the Buick makes it case for existence, but it was for naught. The cabin is quiet and the seats are comfortable, but they never stood out as exceptional. And for its unique and modern styling, the LaCrosse has absolutely zero interior storage space. There are a few microscopic cubbies in the door, two cup holders, and small space under the armrest. We don't know how far Buick's traditional customers drive on road trips, but for our preferred long hauls we need space to put things. While not technically in the same class, the Ford Taurus we has a few weeks ago is a prime example of great storage space design.

While the trip to Wilmington and back only helped to solidify my nonchalant relationship with the Buick, it did reveal a real-world fuel economy number of 26.4 mpg. With an EPA-estimate of 27 mpg, we came away quite impressed. Other features that impressed us were the harmon/kardon stereo system and the rear power sunshade. The stereo was very powerful and featured a very smooth overall tone. Many automakers tend to fall towards an overly bass heavy mix or a shrill high end, it was nice to finally have a nice mid-level arrangement. Of course you still get the IntelliLink system with its Pandora integration, but to be honest, we could take it or leave it. When heading to Wilmington, I spent much of the trip with the sun directly behind me, and that power sunshade dramatically improved comfort and visibility.

On paper, this Buick looks to be a big winner. It has more interior space than the Maxima, new MKZ and ES350, beats all three in horsepower and it has a near perfect crash-test score. Besides this, the Maxima is a more engaging drive and the Lexus is more refined. We don't want it to seem like the LaCrosse is a bad car - far from it, actually - but it is not a great car. It feels like GM and Buick tried very hard to make the most generic car possible. It is better than every Buick to come out for the last twenty years, but that was never a hard target to beat. We just wish GM would have taken a few more risks and made a car that was a little more memorable.

Make no mistake, this is one of the best Buicks ever made, but in today's hyper competitive market the best Buick just isn't good enough.

McLaren reveals P1 interior

 McLaren reveals P1 interior

2013 McLaren P1 interior photo

Minimalist design

McLaren has published three photos with the P1's minimalist interior cabin which features a "shrink wrapped" design theme.

A week ago we saw the digital dash of the supercar and now McLaren is showing the interior cabin which has been designed to feel like the "cockpit of a fighter jet." Carbon fiber can be found just about everywhere, without the layer of resin on top which would have added an extra 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs).

A minimum amount of foam was used for the racing bucket seats which have been encased in very thin carbon fiber shells. Each seat weighs only 10.5 kg (23 lbs) and its height will be custom to suit the driver and passenger.

Various other weight saving measures were implemented as the amount of trim used has been minimized while sound deadening material is absent. As standard, the McLaren P1 doesn't come with floor mats but the client can opt for custom ones with lightweight backing.

The P1 supercar will be publicly unveiled next month at the Geneva Motor Show.

Porsche market manipulation probe expanded - Wolfgang Porsche and Ferdinand Piech in the crosshairs

 Porsche market manipulation probe expanded - Wolfgang Porsche and Ferdinand Piech in the crosshairs

Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Vorsitzender des Vorstands der Volkswagen AG, und Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Pi ch, Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrats der Volkswagen AG 23.04.2009

Authorities trying to discover if the board helped hide VW takeover plans

The fallout from Porsche's failed takeover of Volkswagen continues as Stuttgart prosecutors have expanded their probe which is looking into allegations of market manipulation.

Automotive News is reporting that German officials are now investigating all twelve members - including Wolfgang Porsche and Ferdinand Piech - who were on Porsche SE's supervisory board between March 2008 and October 2008. They are trying to discover if any of the board members assisted former Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking and CFO Holger Haerter in a market manipulation scheme that allegedly attempted to hide Porsche's interest in taking over Volkswagen.

As we have previously reported, Wiedeking and Haerter were recently charged for taking part in the alleged cover up. During an investigation, authorities discovered that the pair was plotting to takeover Volkswagen as far back as February 2008, but publically denied the plans at least five times between March 10th and October 2nd of 2008.

A global sales success

The 2013 Range Rover is proving to be a runaway success as the company's order books are filled with eager customers.

According to Automotive News, most Land Rover dealers in the United States are sold out of the model until early summer. The problem isn't limited to America as global demand has also proved to be strong. As Chris Marchand, executive vice president of operations at Jaguar Land Rover North America, explained “We are asking for as many vehicles as we can get [but] the vehicle is sold out for six months to a year."

Due to the tight supplies, Land Rover decided not to bring the entry-level Range Rover to the United States. It was slated to start at $83,545 but dealers are now limited to selling the mid-level HSE that retails for $88,545.

Land Rover declined to mention how many Range Rovers they have sold, but the model's sales - including the previous generation - were up 52% in January compared to a year ago.

Volkswagen working on CC Shooting Brake - report

 Volkswagen working on CC Shooting Brake - report

2013 Volkswagen CC R-Line

Could arrive in early 2015

Volkswagen is reportedly working on a Shooting Brake version of the CC which should be out in early 2015.

The CC Shooting Brake will be based on the second-gen model and will ride on VW's versatile MQB platform. Senior Volkswagen officials are aiming at an early 2015 launch as a model to fill in the gap between the Passat and Phaeton. For this reason, the new model will grow in size and is expected to be almost 4900mm long.

Thanks to the extended length, the CC Shooting Brake will provide more space inside the cabin, especially for rear passengers who will benefit from additional legroom. Engines will include the same transversely-mounted 4-cylinder gasoline and diesels, joined by a possible plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid.

As standard, the car will have a FWD layout but for more money clients will be able to opt for a 4Motion AWD system using the firm's recently introduced Haldex 5 system which debuted on the new Golf VII 4Motion.

If green lighted for production, the 2015 Volkswagen CC Shooting Brake will have an angled tailgate, significantly curved roofline and offer up to 570 liters cargo room. The decision to put the car into production will be made based on Passat estate sales. A different moniker is possible if and when the model will come out.

Mercedes E400 Turbo coming next year - report

 Mercedes E400 Turbo coming next year - report

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class facelift

Could have a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6

Mercedes just unveiled the facelifted E-Class, but additional changes could be in the works for the bread and butter model.

Motor Trend is reporting the E550's (aka E500) twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 engine could be replaced by a new twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. As the saying goes "there's no replacement for displacement" and this appears to be case as the magazine is reporting the engine will produce roughly 330 bhp (246 kW) and 350 lb-ft (474 Nm) of torque. For comparison, the V8 churns out 402 bhp (300 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque.

It remains unclear if the twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 engine will still be offered in the sedan - at least in the United States - but the magazine doesn't sound overly optimistic. Despite this, there is the possibility that the engine could still be available in the E-Class Coupe and Convertible.

PSA Peugeot Citroen bailout approved by European Union, final decision hinges on restructuring plan

PSA about to be DOA?

The European Union has granted temporary approval to France's request to provide PSA Peugeot Citroen with up to €1.2 ($1.6) billion in loans for a term of up to 36 months.

As part of the proposal, PSA will have to submit a restructuring plan which shows they will be able to survive without further assistance from France or the European Union. This is rather important, as the plan has to be submitted within six months, a contingency of the loan package's approval.

PSA's declining financial state has raised eyebrows as even France appears to be growing wary of the stream of bad news. While the French parliament had pledged to offer up to €7 ($9.3) billion in loan guarantees, they only asked the European Union to approve €1.2 ($1.6) billion.

As we have previously reported, PSA is pinning their hopes on a tie-up with General Motors. The two companies have plans to share three platforms, co-develop engines and create a joint purchasing organization to reduce costs.

A reserve bike prepared by NCR for Hailwood in the 1979 was put on sale by a private owner with an estimated price of 20.000- 30.000. The body of the bike was NCR, the engine was up-rated, but the frame was a standard 900 SS.

The bike has Brembo brakes, Marzocchi forks and Marzocchi rear shocks. It has a Veglia competition tachometer, twin Dell'Orto PHM 40-mm carburettors, front oil cooler, Campagnolo wheels oil pressure gauge, Verlicchi handlebars and light clutch.

All enthusiasts know the story of Mike Hailwood's return to the Isle of Man TT races in 1978 and his success on the Steve Wynne Ducati 900 SS, which led to Ducati's first World Championship.

At 110.62 mph, Hailwood broke Phil Read's lap record by nine mph on the way to an immensely popular victory. He followed up with a win at Mallory Park the next weekend, a crash at Donington and a 3rd place at Silverstone against much faster opposition. Ducati was thrilled with the TT result and promised to build Mike Hailwood replicas and also give Hailwood a factory bike for the 1979 TT.

Hailwood tested the 1979 F1 bike at Misano but crashed before any changes could be made, cracking two ribs. After numerous delays, Ducati sent two NCR endurance race bikes to England; one was an endurance machine, and the other was a TT1 variant with a wet clutch engine. Wynne tried numerous modifications-even fitting the 1978 frame-but the bikes could not produce enough power and handled poorly. The best Hailwood could do was 5th place in the TT, and he declined to ride the endurance bike in any other races.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class spy photo 07.02.2013 / Michael Baum ller

Arriving next year in Geneva

A WCF reader was able to take a few photos of a 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class prototype.

The pictures were taken near Stuttgart, Germany and they show a heavily camouflaged prototype, similar to the ones we've already seen in previous spy photos. Set to arrive at next year's Geneva Motor Show, the next-gen C-Class (W205) will be 4700mm long, making it 100mm longer than the current model, while 80mm of the added length will be in the wheelbase which will stand at 2820mm.

The 2014 C-Class will ride on the MRA platform which means it will be lighter and could allow the base C160 variant to tip the scales at less than 1,380 kg (3,042 lbs). It will probably have a double wishbone front suspension and an updated rear multi-link layout.

Power will come from a longitudinally-mounted four-cylinder and V6 engines, with output varying from 184 hp (137 kW) to 330 hp (246 kW). The range-topping AMG version is set to get a new twin-turbo V8 4.0- or 5.5-liter mill.

Special thanks goes to Michael Baumüller for sending the pics!

2006 EDAG Biwak Concept
The "EDAG Biwak"
a Derivative Concept with the Potential of a Volume Vehicle

For this new EDAG concept car, the classic, half-rounded beetle shape has been converted into an estate silhouette, creating extra room for various new professional and leisure applications. As well as offering the advantages of a marked increase in storage space and greater headroom for the back seat passengers, the the SUV light concept also provides more ground clearance, to enable the driver to take the vehicle off the road or race track. Practical and stylish: the rear door provides easy access to the luggage section. The new body design drawn up by the EDAG stylists and developed by the EDAG engineers has the potential for use in vehicles for volume production. The EDAG Biwak would be the ideal second car for a family, though it could just as easily prove popular as a stylish leisure vehicle for surfers or divers, or even do service as a delivery truck for crafts or tradesmen. The concept combines a multitude of requirements, making it attractive to a broad spectrum of customers. To demonstrate the industrial feasibility of the concept, EDAG's development and production specialists have also worked out different manufacturing concepts for various quantities.

Trim + Colour as Marketing Instruments

Geneva Version: "Patina instead of High Gloss"

To increase its appeal to the intended target groups, the EDAG design team have created a sophisticated concept for individual equipment and features. Johannes Barckmann explains: "By utilising clearly worked out colour and trim concepts, we can adapt the look of the EDAG Biwak to appeal to the various target groups - high gloss finish and chrome elements for the bank clerk; crinkle finish, steel rims and denim for the young rebel. By offering numerous alternative versions of the extras, we can satisfy the customers' constant calls for individualisation."

With the version for the Geneva Show, EDAG deliberately set out to produce a provocative exterior - the EDAG Biwak look was inspired by the spirit of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, and takes up a successful trend in the fashion branch.
A matt crinkle finish on the ourtside combined with natural leather and denim on the inside create a direct counterpoint to the usual high-gloss look of other new cars.
The crinkle finish lends the EDAG Biwak a used look, which brings the direct utility value of the vehicle very much to the fore. "We are giving the customer the freedom to make full use of the vehicle, dispelling his or her worries about that first, inevitable scratch in the paintwork," is how Johannes accounts for the provocative trim colour concept.
In this case, the motto "patina instead of high gloss" is directed at a target group intent upon breaking with convention. Just one example of how colour and trim can be employed as marketing instruments.

2005 ACURA MDX

Acura MDX

OVERVIEW

The 2001 Acura MDX(TM) was launched in 2000 to define a new era in the evolution of luxury sport utility vehicles, treading beyond the limits of existing SUVs in terms of handling, packaging efficiency and environmental impact. It was developed with the overriding goal of setting new benchmarks for luxury SUV performance. That performance goal applies to the three main themes of the development concept; to establish new performance benchmarks in the SUV category for versatility, responsibility and dynamic performance. As the development process progressed, an additional development goal was added - furnishing the vehicle with an array of cutting edge features that effectively "defeat winter" for its driver and passengers - limiting the harsh effects of the cold winter months on MDX occupants.

After a stellar first year, in which the MDX established itself as the #1 SUV by capturing both the Motor Trend Sport Utility of the Year and the North American Truck of the Year awards, Acura set out to make it even better, increasing its already formidable performance and further refining the MDX inside and out. For 2003, a new engine boosted horsepower from 240 to 260, a new 5-speed automatic transmission was added and the chassis and suspension were enhanced to take advantage of the additional power. A new drive-by-wire throttle system was included and the state-of-the art VTM-4(R) four-wheel drive system was revised to provide enhanced vehicle control during acceleration, cornering and braking.

The 2004 model year MDX received exterior styling enhancements that gave ita muscular, performance-oriented look representative of its impressive powertrain. For 2005, Acura turns its attention to updating the MDX interior with the latest technologies and enhanced safety. To that end, XM(R) Satellite Radio is now standard on all models. The optional Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition(TM) has been enhanced to provide a quicker response time, additional voice recognition commands, more points of interest and access to the ZAGAT restaurant guide. MDX models equipped with the navigation system will also receive the OnStar system. In addition, the HandsFreeLink(TM) wireless phone interface, which allows hands-free dialing to restaurants and other points of interest, is now included in the Touring Package. Models equipped with the optional Rear Entertainment System also come equipped with a 6 disc, in-dash CD player, compared to an underseat6 disk player on the 2004 model.

Chassis enhancements for 2005 include an improved Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA(R)) system and Brake Assist, which helps drivers apply full braking pressure in an accident avoidance situation.. Three new exterior colors are added: Desert Rock Metallic, Billet Silver metallic and Steel Blue Metallic. A larger, redesigned gas tank, increases capacity by over one gallon, and extends driving range while at the same time helping the MDX meet LEV-2 Evaporative emissions requirements.

For 2005, significant changes to the MDX include:

* Standard XM Satellite Radio
* Acura HandsFreeLink Bluetooth wireless phone interface included in optional Touring Package
* OnStar on all models equipped with navigation system
* Larger fuel tank
* In-Dash 6 Disc CD player on models equipped with Rear Entertainment System
* Enhanced Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system
* Enhanced navigation system
o Quicker response time
o Additional voice recognition commands
o More points of interest
o ZAGAT Guide
* LEV-2 ULEV emissions system
* 3 new exterior colors including Desert Rock Metallic, Billet Silver Metallic and Steel Blue Metallic

PERFORMANCE ATTRIBUTES OVERVIEW

Outstanding performance has always been a fundamental Acura character trait. The development of Acura's first in-house designed and engineered SUV presented the opportunity for the engineers to sidestep the shortcomings of products already on the market and begin with a fresh approach to the SUV equation. That approach was to create the first no-compromise SUV - melding attractive design, unmatched versatility, driving exhilaration, social responsibility, and value in one neatly wrapped package.

The MDX is powered by a 3.5-liter, V-6 engine, tuned to deliver an outstanding 265 peak horsepower at 5800 rpm and 253 lbs-ft of torque between 3500 and 5000 rpm. Providing V-8-like power, this engine is coupled to a compact 5-speed automatic transmission and a drive-by-wire throttle system (DBW) that deliver precise shifts and reduced shift shock. The MDX's standard VTM-4 four-wheel drive system works seamlessly with the DBW and the standard Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system to enhance performance on low traction surfaces, and enhance stability in all conditions.

The MDX's 4500-pound boat towing package (3500-pound for trailers) was achieved by tuning the powertrain and chassis systems to manage heavy loads with confidence. This vehicle's wider-than-normal stance, high-torque engine, wide-ratio 5-speed automatic transmission, and powerful brakes yield a highly competent tow vehicle.

ACCELERATION, BRAKING, CORNERING PERFORMANCE

A pillar of the Acura development approach is that the driver's seat should be the most rewarding seat in the vehicle. With this in mind, the development team groomed the MDX to behave like a sports sedan when driven in an assertive manner. The starting point is a 3.5-liter SOHC V-6 engine that combines a remarkably broad range of torque - 253 lbs-ft between 3500 and 5000 rpm - witha potent 265 horsepower at 5800 rpm. Factor in a wide-ratio, 5-speed automatic transmission and a sensible curb weight achieved by the shrewd use of high-strength materials, and MDX posts outstanding acceleration performance.

Acknowledging that ordinary SUVs feel clumsy and cumbersome, extra effort was invested in making sure that the MDX provides driving exhilaration consistent with Acura standards. Chassis systems and the power-to-weight ratio are optimized for all-around performance.

The 2005 MDX features 4-channel Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) that has been enhanced with active yaw control for increased driver control during accident avoidance maneuvers, aggressive cornering and inclement weather. The VSA system monitors lateral (cornering) stability and seamlessly integrates traction control, 4-wheel drive, Anti-lock braking, throttle control and stability control functions.

Demanding drivers expect a vehicle's braking system to match its acceleration- and MDX measures up to that task as well. To provide short stopping distances, high fade resistance, and a reassuring pedal feel, the MDX's four-wheel disc braking system uses large-diameter rotors, extra-rigid calipers and dual-piston front calipers. The 4-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) features electronic distribution of brake forces for optimum use of the traction available at each corner of the vehicle, and new for 2005, Brake Assist. The result is responsive braking performance for short stopping distances with a confident pedal feel.

Excellent handling begins with getting the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics right from the start. A wide track maximizes stability and cornering grip, so MDX has the widest track in its class. The MDX design was tuned to achieve the best possible maneuverability and helps to minimize the cumbersome feeling that plagues most truck-based SUVs.

To overcome the usual ride-versus-handling compromises, engineers incorporated front and rear subframes to isolate road noise and driveline vibration from the passenger compartment, along with independent front and rear suspension systems with extra wheel travel and fine-tuned suspension geometry. Low roll centers combined with large stabilizer bars provide progressive, predictable cornering response and excellent stability at the limit of adhesion. Lightweight
materials - such as aluminum castings for all major driveline components and extensive use of high strength steel unit body components - give MDX an overall agile feeling.

THE VERSATILE SUV

The theme of versatility was applied to each area of development, from exterior and interior styling to powertrain to chassis design and the many performance targets. From the inside out, MDX offers many options to the driver and passengers including the potential for six seating configurations from the split and folding second and third-row seats.

The options don't end there however, as the powertrain is tuned for optimum performance in virtually any condition the driver is likely to encounter. Key to this is an engine that is powerful, fuel efficient and low in emissions - with a broad range of torque and horsepower. Likewise, the 5-speed transmission offers one of the widest overall gear ratio ranges in the segment, ensuring that engine speeds are matched as closely as possible to the demands of the driving conditions at any time.

MDX's unit body construction provides the optimum balance of strength and rigidity while still being the most space and weight efficient construction for an SUV of this size. All suspension, steering and braking components are designed to minimize unsprung weight to improve handling precision, but are still rugged enough for medium-duty, off-road driving. For 2005, structural enhancements were made to allow all MDX models to further enhance safety.

THE RESPONSIBLE SUV

MDX demonstrates a high degree of environmental responsibility by providing excellent fuel economy with very low exhaust emissions. Thanks in part to a high output exhaust system, and innovative fuel injectors, the MDX meets stringent LEV-2 ULEV emissions levels. Changes to the shape of the gas tank increase capacity and reduce sloshing noise while also helping the MDX meet LEV-2 Evaporative standards. The MDX's combination of 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway places it ahead of many competitive luxury SUVs in fuel economy and proves that powerful SUVs can be environmentally responsible and fuel efficient.

Safety has been an integral part of the MDX design from its inception, and an important aspect of the responsible SUV concept. To help avoid situations that could lead to a collision, MDX is engineered with the agility and maneuverability necessary to help maintain control in emergency maneuvers.

When a collision is unavoidable, MDX helps protect its occupants with a reinforced body structure and state-of-the-art occupant protection features. The MDX features front dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags and a Side Curtain Airbag system to help protect vehicle occupants from head and neck injuries in the event of a sufficient side impact. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System uses sensors in the wheels to alert the driver when tire pressure drops below 25 percent of the recommended level.

MEDIUM-DUTY OFF-ROAD CAPABILITY

The engineers who designed the MDX tested a range of competitive SUVs to help quantify off-pavement use patterns, customer needs, and engineering targets for the MDX. Accommodating extreme off-road use can impose compromises elsewhere in the vehicle, such as added weight, awkward entry and egress, poor fuel economy, and reduced on-road performance. With this in mind, the MDX team visited nine off-road parks in California, Nevada, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Michigan to study SUVs in their natural, off-road habitat. While a few competitors offer the extra ground clearance, driveline equipment, and chassis hardware necessary to support ambitious off road excursions, the engineers learned that few customers use these extreme capabilities regularly.

After observing casual off-roaders, MDX engineers concluded that surpassing the class's most capable off-road machine was not in MDX's best interests and that a medium-duty off-road capability was most consistent with the philosophy embraced by the MDX. Medium-duty capability would readily support trips into the wilderness for camping or to launch a boat without providing the rigorous equipment needed to conquer the extremes of the Rubicon Trail.

To define exactly what constitutes medium-duty off-road capability, the MDX engineering team selected 14 key performance criteria based on observations of casual off-road adventurers. They then constructed special test courses at their R&D facilities in North America to assure that MDX delivers all the intended capabilities with impeccable reliability and durability.

The list of test courses includes:

* 30-degree dirt hill
* Sand hill
* Water pit
* Rock roads
* Embedded log course
* Step-up, step-down
* Sand drag strip
* Gully course
* Ground contact course
* Washboard road
* Frame twister
* Power hop hill (23-degree slope with rippled surface)
* Gravel road
* Startable grade

Numerous engineering changes were based on experiences gained in testing. These included:

* A deeper oil pan was included to meet the hill climbing criteria.
* A more effective air filter was specified to remove dust from the engine's air supply.
* The tow hooks were upgraded to handle loads imposed during extraction from "stuck vehicle" situations.
* Waterproofing was added to support MDX's ability to traverse up to18-inch-deep bodies of water.
* Throttle actuation was calibrated to provide more sensitive control over engine output at low speeds.

For an acid test, engineers took prototype vehicles for a 200-mile off-road test on the Mojave Trail located in Southern California. This gauntlet of loose rocks, sandy washes, twisting grades, and narrow escarpments helped ensure that MDX has what it takes to venture off road and home again with confidence.

The results speak for themselves - MDX will climb a 31-degree (60-percent) paved slope with a two-passenger load. It has eight inches of ground clearance,a 28-degree approach angle, a 21-degree departure angle, and a 21-degree breakover angle for negotiating rough terrain. It can claw up a 28-degree (53-percent) dirt slope from a dead stop.

TOWING

One of the reasons people buy SUVs is to be able to haul pop-up campers, medium-sized boats, and recreational vehicle trailers. To understand this facet of the MDX's makeup, MDX engineers polled focus groups and studied survey results that tapped 200,000 households. Their findings offered the insights needed to properly outfit the MDX to surpass the towing expectations of most customers.

Ultimately, the engineers concluded that a casual or weekend towing capability was most appropriate for MDX. Customer feedback helped set the towing limit at 4500 pounds for boats and 3500 pounds for other types of trailers. A heavier load is acceptable with boats because their pointed bow shapes impose less aerodynamic drag on the towing vehicle than a slab-faced, square-cornered trailer. The 3500/4500-pound rating is calculated to include up to four passengers and their cargo.

VARIABLE TORQUE MANAGEMENT(R) 4-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM (VTM-4(R))

The MDX is equipped with an advanced 4-wheel drive system - VTM-4. The VTM-4 system consists of a pair of computer controlled wet clutches in the rear axle that work to maintain traction in all types of conditions.

Unlike other on-demand 4-wheel drive systems, MDX doesn't wait for slippage to occur before going to work. Instead, torque is proactively delivered to the rear wheels in proportion to forward acceleration to supplement front-wheel drive. This innovative, proactive approach pays two dividends: on dry pavement, there's less likelihood of torque steer (a tendency for propulsion forces to tug at the steering and nudge the vehicle off line) and there is more front tire adhesion available for cornering. In snow or wet conditions, automatic and proactive all-wheel drive gets the vehicle moving from a standstill with less chance of wheelspin.

If conditions are really slippery and wheel spin is unavoidable, VTM-4 instantly reacts by adding rear-wheel torque in proportion to both the slippage and the rate of increase of slippage. This enhances performance on low traction surfaces and also improves steering trace and feel during acceleration. In addition, the new VSA system further enhances traction in different conditions by providinga limited-slip differential effect for the front wheels.

A special lock mode is also provided to help extract the vehicle from a stuck condition. To use this get-out-of-a-snowbank capability, the driver moves the shift lever to first, second or reverse and presses the VTM-4 lock button on the dash. With the lock mode engaged, VTM-4 "locks" the rear axle to provide maximum power transfer to each rear wheel. As speed increases above six mph, the system automatically reduces the lock effect to the rear axle. By 18 mph, the system reverts to normal mode.

DEFEAT WINTER OBJECTIVE

While studying competitive vehicles and the SUV marketplace, the MDX development team discovered that a well-designed product could be an effective defense against some of the frustrating rituals of the coldest months of the year. Based on that insight, members of the MDX development team that had grown up in northern parts of the U.S. drew on their personal backgrounds to formulate a clever "defeat winter" objective for MDX - consisting of a long list of designed-in features and systems designed to provide superior cold-weather performance. The result is that MDX can be a major confidence builder for those faced with driving through severe winter road conditions.

The MDX's winter-beating tactics begin with a chassis engineered for excellent dynamics on wet, icy, or snowy pavement, the VTM-4 all-wheel-drive system and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA). Various other chassis details are also engineered with a priority on winter driving. MDX's Goodyear and Michelin tires are compounded with silica to enhance ice and snow traction at cold temperatures. Testing has demonstrated that the grip of these tires is superior to many of the snow tires currently on the market. MDX's front suspension has a very low scrub radius so that braking on split-friction surfaces (such as when one side of the vehicle is on ice and the other side is on dry pavement) does not tend to pull the vehicle in one direction or the other.

Total roll stiffness is equitably distributed so that cornering response is linear and predictable even at low lateral Gs experienced during slippery conditions. The driveline is designed to provide natural and neutral handling response on snow and ice. With a static ground clearance of 8 inches, MDX is unlikely to get mired in snow drifts. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is equipped with electronic brake-force distribution and four channels to provide maximum steering control even when traction varies dramatically from wheel to wheel. To preserve lateral stability, the rear brakes are programmed with a select-low strategy to modulate line pressure at both rear wheels as soon as either one approaches lock-up.

Features and amenities included as MDX standard equipment further enhance its winter-driving prowess. The rear heater is electronically linked to the operation of the front heater to speed warm up after a cold start and heat is ducted to all seating positions.

Electrically heated front seats and window defoggers are standard. Rear splash guards are provided to deflect slush and stones away from the side of the vehicle. Extra seals positioned at the bottom of the doors keep mud and slush from building up on lower surfaces that are likely to contact long coats, pant legs or dresses. Likewise, the windshield molding and the outside rearview mirror mounting trim are shaped to guide moisture flow away from the side windows for optimum foul-weather visibility. Door-mounted rearview mirrors are electrically heated to clear frost and fog.

MDX models equipped with the Touring Package are equipped with rain-sensing windshield wipers that, when in automatic mode, adjust wiper speed to correspond to the amount of rain that is contacting the windshield. The windshield washer reservoir is a large 1.2 gallons for a generous supply of washer fluid, and an indicator light advises the driver when it's time to replenish that fluid. Washer nozzles are engineered for optimum performance with a fluidic design in front and a jet-type sprayer in back. Since remote keyless entry is standard equipment on MDX, owners will not be kept from entering their vehicle by a frozen lock cylinder.

2006 ACURA MDX Concept

Acura MD-X Concept

The Acura "MD-X Concept" luxury performance SUV made its world debut today at the 2006 New York International Auto Show featuring bold, sleek exterior styling indicative of the next generation MDX production model.

"Every aspect of the MD-X Concept design conveys performance while still retaining SUV functionality," said John Mendel, senior vice president, auto operations. "The styling signifies a bold direction for the next generation MDX, both in appearance and substance."

The MD-X Concept is fashioned as a true driver's SUV, with its low, wide stance and aggressive design. Its sleek surface lines are modeled after a high-powered megayacht.

The MD-X Concept features a wider track and longer wheelbase that give the vehicle a sportier, performance look. The profile of the concept reveals a refined SUV with smooth, chiseled lines and an elegant form. A dominant character line runs from the front quarter panel to the rear, evoking the feeling of forward movement. The sharply raked D-pillar creates a stealth, aerodynamic appearance while still retaining the third row seating functionality and cargo carrying capability of the current generation MDX.

The Concept sits low to the ground despite the large 20-inch five-spoke custom alloy wheels, while the large wheel arches and flares add to the Concept's muscular appearance. The sleek cabin features flush mounted windshield glass, which improves aerodynamics while adding to the MD-X Concept's smooth and flowing design.

"The smooth lines and sleek shape of the MD-X Concept challenge the conventions of SUV design," said Ricky Hsu, chief designer for the MD-X Concept. "Our goal was to create the image of a sports sedan while maintaining generous interior volume and utility of a SUV."

The front hood is accented with pronounced character lines culminating in an aggressive five-sided grille, which gives the MD-X its bold presence. The commanding front grille features a dominant center bar running through a solid aluminum face. The narrow, Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights appear to grow out of the massive grille, giving the overall front-end a strong, distinct look.

"The front end of the MD-X Concept communicates power and prestige," explains Hsu. "We want drivers to do a double-take when the vehicle passes them on the road."

In the rear, the MD-X Concept has an integrated rear hatch, which sits flush against the bumper to create a smooth, clean appearance. LED taillights wrap around the cargo hatch adding to the vehicles wide and low appearance. A rear spoiler improves aerodynamics and the integrated dual exhaust pipes add to the SUV's sporty style.

2007 JEEP Trailhawk Concept
Trailhawk Concept

The Jeep Trailhawk concept merges the spectrum of the Jeep brand by combining the core off-road features of the new body-on-frame four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with the refined sophistication of an all-new on-road open-air concept vehicle, providing a unique and fresh expression for Jeep. Built off the new Wrangler platform, the Jeep Trailhawk is a more refined highway cruiser without sacrificing any of Jeep's legendary off-road capabilities.

"The key to the look of the Trailhawk," said Nick Vardis, Principal Exterior Designer, "is the vehicle's distinctive proportions, due in part to its 116-inch wheelbase. The dash-to-front-axle dimension is dramatically long, giving the vehicle a sense of forward motion, while the front and rear overhangs are tight and abbreviated."

Vardis said the body side is muscular and broad-shouldered, with the sheet metal pulled into shape, much like a drawn arrow in the bow of a skilled archer. Even the pillars are pulled back. The forward motion of the body is further accented by the drive of the raising beltline.

The stance is broad, and the wheels, pushed to the corners of the vehicle, are enclosed in robust flares dramatically offset from the body. Partly trapezoidal in shape, yet not asymmetrical, these angular, crisply-contoured wheel flares reinterpret one of Jeep's fundamental design cues.

"The flares are stretched and pulled taut at one end," Vardis said. "Each presents a 'long side' angled toward the center of the body."

The body in turn tapers toward the front in plan view to expose more of the flares and accent the wide stance. The flares enclose large 22-inch, five-spoke wheels, each with a hefty 34-inch overall diameter. The specially-crafted tires are accented by a red stripe, with the red color repeated on the exposed brake calipers.

The lower body, which kicks outward along the bottoms of the doors, intersects the flares crisply. Tucked beneath this horizontal element is a recessed running board, accented by a silver molding. A tall trapezoidal vent, located at the front fender-front door cut line, is home to the circular Trail Rated badge.

The Trailhawk's long hood is fronted by a signature seven-slot Jeep grille angled rearward to match the lean-back surface of the forward flares, with the slots filled with a mesh texture. Bracketed between the grille and the flares, the chamfered headlamps mimic the lean-back stance. Beneath their clear flush lenses, HID projector beam quad lamps nestled into twin "telescopic" polished aluminum barrels light the way forward while LEDs, configured in parallel stripes provide park and turn signals.

"The main headlamp units are cropped diagonally across the top," said Vardis. "They peer out from an angled brow, giving the vehicle its bold, sinister look. In front view, the left and right lamps evoke the hooded eyes of a bird of prey.

"Like other concepts, we first viewed the math surface of the grille and headlamps together in the computer" added Vardis. "We immediately noticed the hawkish expression, hence the name 'Trailhawk.'"

The taillamps mimic the look of the headlamps, including the striped turn signals, with the surface of the liftgate carved away.

The vehicle's upper structure is set onto the lower body, encased by a crisp, chamfered 360-degree molding that runs around the greenhouse, accenting the high, arching beltline. At the base of the windshield is a seven-slot cowl screen that reprises the grille. The body is painted in Argent Pearl high-gloss, with the flares and lower body a slightly darker low-gloss variant.

The side windows retract fully into the body, leaving no B-pillar above the belt, while the diagonal quarter windows are also fully retractable. Gray-tinted twin longitudinal glass panels over the first- and second-row seats and the glass panel over the cargo compartment are removable, as is the swing-up backlight. With all the glass lowered and removed, the Trailhawk offers occupants virtually the same open-air ambience as a typical soft top Jeep. The fixed central spine contains overhead lighting and several integrated storage bins.

"The Jeep Trailhawk interior emphasizes the vehicle's open air-freedom, inviting elements of the exterior theme into the interior,"said Cliff Wilkins, responsible for the interior design. "Tough mechanical elements which evoke exterior details are contrasted with sophisticated materials and finishes to give a modern, rugged, purposeful interior while delivering a premium off-road experience."

The four-passenger interior is dominated by two major design elements -the cross-car instrument panel (I/P) form and a full-length central spine which forms the floor console. The AC outlets, center stack compass/inclinometer, and the dimensional, double-deck "biplane" gauges are housed in circular casings having the appearance of machined aluminum, with detailing matching headlamp surrounds. The two-tone leather-wrapped aluminum steering wheel features vertical individual switches for lights and speed control.

Riding the transmission tunnel, the console's raised walls create a full-length open bin, handy for the storage of sundry items. Within the console's side rails, two front/rear combination armrest/storage bin modules, movable via concealed tracks, can be positioned fore-aft at the occupants' discretion. Using the familiar touchpad technology of laptop computers, a flip-out pad for the remote control fold-away flat screen navigation unit is housed in the forward armrest.

"The open console's unique utility is enhanced by the relocation of the transfer case 'Terrain Selector' switch to the center stack of the I/P," said Wilkins. "Also, there is the use of an electronic gear selector/park brake lever mounted to the right side of the steering column to continue this effect."

Additional storage is available forward of the drop-open center stack control module, and in the lower door trim panels.

The driver and three passengers can relax in individual premium leather seating in Bark Black and Firewood Orange. The vehicle's floor is a durable spray-finish with integrated non-slip heel pads, practical for all-weather use.

In the cargo area, each quarter panel houses a removable, portable "audio pod" sound system. Handsome in their rectangular dark gray cases accented with silver circular speaker bezels, each "pod" is fitted with a dock for an MP3 player. For carrying of first aid or road hazard gear, jerry-can style boxes in easy-to-find Firewood Orange are mounted forward of the speaker "pods."

The utility of the cargo area is enhanced by a drop-down tailgate featuring integral concealed storage, four cup holders, and a sliding Load 'N Go cargo tray with movable partitions that roll rearward for easy retrieval of stored items.

"One of the most remarkable things about the interior," concludes Wilkins, "is that it was designed and surfaced entirely electronically - there were no traditional sketches or 3-D models. Even so, the interior turned out just as we had envisioned."
