2015 BMW M4 Coupe MotoGP safety car unveiled with water injection system [video]
Will be installed in a production car in the near future
BMW has unveiled an upgraded M4 Coupe which will act as the MotoGP safety car for the 2015 season.
The M4 is back to fulfill its duties as a MotoGP safety car but compared to the 2014 car it has received a newly developed water injection system which according to M division engineers not only boosts performance but also reduces fuel consumption. As a method to reduce the temperature of the combustion air, BMW developed a solution to inject a fine spray of water into the collector which will lower the tendency of the engine to knock, thus enabling the point of ignition to come closer to the optimum value.
As a consequence, this creates a more effective combustion process and at the same time it diminishes the combustion temperature. Since the cool air has a higher density which increases the oxygen content inside the combustion chamber, this means the higher pressure during the combustion process will improve performance and torque. Moreover, the lower thermal strain on the components will increase their lifespan.
The necessary water is stored in a frost-proof five-liter tank located in the M4’s trunk which also incorporates the water pump, sensors and valves which are controlled by the engine’s electronics. The pump feeds water into the injectors at a ten-bar pressure while the volume of water provided depends on the load, engine speed and temperature in order to grant optimal water consumption. BMW M says the water tank must be refilled before any "rigorous action out on the racetrack" while in normal driving on public roads they estimate a water refill once every five stops for refueling without requiring any extra maintenance.
BMW says the water injection system will soon be offered on a production model.

Skoda has released one last set of teaser images depicting their flagship model, the all-new Superb.
These latest teaser pics provide a more revealing image of the fourth-gen Superb which will be stylistically influenced by the VisionC concept as well as by the latest Octavia. Based on the Volkswagen Passat B8, the new Czech range-topping model will be bigger than its German sibling and will probably end up being the largest car in the mid-size segment.
Described as being the "best Skoda ever", the new model will drop the complex (and rather useless) dual trunk opening of the outgoing Superb which means it will be offered only with a hatch opening that will grant access to an enormous cargo capacity of an estimated 625 liters or 1,760 liters with the rear seats folded. The added 80mm wheelbase will grant stellar rear legroom inside a cabin which has already been previewed looking like a more upscale Octavia interior.
The hatchback (liftback) will be the first to come out and will likely be followed shortly by the Combi variant which will have an even larger trunk. A sporty derivative is being considered but if made it will not be labeled as a vRS model.
We will have all the details on February 17 when Skoda will introduce the new Superb liftback at a special event organized in Prague, Czech Republic.

Dodge has introduced a unique Viper GTC this week at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show.
About a month ago Dodge revealed their Viper GTC promising to bring no less than 8,000 exterior color choices, 24,000 stripe colors, 16 interior trims, 10 wheel options and six aerodynamics packages. Now, a heavily customized Viper GTC is on display in Chicago with a rather psychedelic paint scheme and the Time Attack front splitter and rear spoiler made from carbon fiber.
Just like all the other Viper GTCs, this one is based on the GT version and has received the Sidewinder Matte alloys while the anodized carbon package includes the rear brake duct bezel and the rear applique surrounding the taillights and license plate holder.
Dodge says they will be taking orders for the Viper GTC starting this month, with prices beginning at $94,995. Production is set to kick off in the second quarter of the year at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant.

Renault has introduced in homeland France the Captur Pure special edition which boasts a more powerful Energy dCi 110 engine.
Up until now Renault was offering the diesel Captur solely with a 1.5-liter dCi 90 but now the model has received a beefier dCi 110 which develops 110 HP (81 kW) and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque, thus making it 20 HP (15 kW) and 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) more powerful. It's a Euro 6-compliant engine and works with a six-speed manual gearbox to grant the Captur a fuel consumption in the extra-urban cycle of only 3.7 liters / 100 km (63.5 mpg US or 76.3 mpg UK) and CO2 emissions of just 98 g/km.
In terms of performance, the 2015 Renault Captur Energy dCi 110 will run the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 11.03 seconds (2s quicker) and top out at 109 mph (175 km/h).
What sets this special edition apart are the bespoke roof decals, unique side mirror housings and a special Cassiopée Grey paint which can be combined with an Etoilé Black roof. Aside from the compulsory "Pure" badging, the limited-run Captur also has dark charcoal & smoke grey leather upholstery, numbered Pure door sill badging and carpet mats. It's based on the Intens trim and comes with the Techno Pack encompassing R-Link infotainment system and a reversing camera.
Prices for this special edition start at €25,100 but Renault is also offering the dCi 90 engine with EDC gearbox from €25,300 and a TCe 120 EDC variant from €23,800.

Dodge is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Shaker hood by introducing the 2015 Challenger R/T Shaker, R/T Plus Shaker and 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker.
First up, the $35,495 Challenger R/T Shaker features Satin Black Shaker stripes, a rear spoiler and a Satin Black fuel-filler cap with a heritage “FUEL” logo. The model also has projector fog lamps and 20-inch polished aluminum wheels with a satin finish and black pockets.
Interior changes are limited but include cloth sport seats with "Ballistic 2" inserts, Tungsten accent stitching and a “Shaker” startup screen on the infotainment system.
However, the real coup de grace is a Shaker hood which feeds air to a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine that produces up to 375 bhp (279 kW) and 410 lb-ft (555 Nm) of torque.
The $38,495 Challenger R/T Plus Shaker goes one step further as it features heated / ventilated Nappa leather sport seats, a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and "Dodge" branded floor mats. The model also has a premium audio system, unique door bolsters and 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system. Last but not least, there are 20-inch lightweight forged aluminum wheels with a matte black finish.
The $42,495 Challenger 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker is described as the “King of all Shakers” and features a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that produces 485 bhp (361 kW) and 475 lb-ft (643 Nm) of torque. Other highlights include an active stainless steel sports exhaust system, a sport-tuned suspension and high-performance Brembo brakes.

Hyundai has introduced the 2016 Elantra GT at the Chicago Auto Show.
Designed to stand out from the crowd, the updated model has a new grille and restyled 17-inch alloy wheels.
The interior largely carries over but there's newly optional ventilated front seats which are a class exclusive. The model also gains an improved infotainment system with HD Radio and Siri integration. There's also an optional Blue Link system with new connectivity features such as Remote Start with Climate Control and Destination Search by Google.
Power is provided by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 173 bhp (129 kW) and 154 lb-ft (208 Nm) of torque. It can be connected to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual shift controls.
The 2016 Elantra GT will go on sale in the United States next month and pricing starts at $18,800 (excluding an $825 destination charge).

Video: Alpha Omega Nissan GT-R Sets 1/2 Mile World Record
Over the last couple of years, the Alpha Omega Nissan GT-R from AMS Performance has become a legend among highly modified cars, and it recently outdid itself once more by shattering the standing 1/2 mile world record for GT-Rs. The AMS Performance development car managed to hit no less than 224.91 mph during the course of just half a mile, with V-box data to back it up.
The record-breaking run happened during the WannaGoFast Florida 1/2 Mile Shootout, which was hosted at the Jumbolair Airport, in Ocala, Florida. Sporting a new 4.0-liter, V-6 billet engine block with a twin-turbocharging and a set of DOT-approved tires, the 2,000-horsepower, AMS-tuned Godzilla achieved the insanely fast 0-2,640 foot pass while still being a street legal vehicle with a fully stock GT-R frame, chassis and interior. Apart from the near-slick tires and the removable parachute and wing, the Alpha Omega GT-R looks pretty much identical to a stock GT-R.
According to AMS Performance, the record-breaking run didn't happen without drama though, as the car's traction control system fought to keep the model going the right way almost every inch of the 1/2 mile. In fact, rear axle speed averaged 10 mph higher than the front throughout the entire run, with AMS estimating that around 200-300 horsepower didn't reach the pavement because of the traction control intervening.

Save for a few years as the Rabbit, the Golf has been a staple in VW's U.S. lineup for what seems like forever. The SportWagen launched in 2009 under the Passat name, though it was always just a Golf with a Jetta badge. In the 2015 model year, however, VW decided to completely redesign the SportWagen and reposition it in the Golf lineup, like it should have been back when it debuted.
The 2015 Golf SportWagen was previewed by the 2014 Golf SportWagen 4MOTION Concept at the New York Auto Show. Just as I expected, the production model is nearly identical to the concept, save for the fact that VW has yet to confirm 4MOTION all-wheel drive for the version that'll hit dealers.
As was long the case for the Jetta SportWagen, the Golf SportWagen will enjoy a thin segment in terms of competition. Eventually, the rest of the automotive world will move into this abandoned segment, but for now it's Golf or nothing, unless you want to move up to a Volvo or down to a five-door hatchback.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Nighthawk
Making its debut in 2007 at the North American International Auto Show, the Phantom Drophead Coupe is currently in its second generation, with the British luxury brand having unveiled the Series II in 2013. Updates included changes to the exterior cosmetics, enhanced cabin equipment, and improved fuel economy.
This $474,600 vehicle is one of the most expensive Rolls models available, but that hasn't stopped the marque from creating several special editions that cost even more, just in case, you know, the standard car won't cut it at the yacht club.
The latest example is the "Nighthawk," offered exclusively to North American customers. Part of the Rolls-Royce Bespoke customization program, this ultra-luxury convertible was first seen on public roads in Phoenix during the lavish events of the rich and famous during Super Bowl XLIX. Only nine units will be created.
Rolls-Royce says the design was "inspired by stealth technology in modern aerospace development," but clearly, the car doesn't blend into the background. Even with dark paint and minor exterior changes, the Phantom Nighthawk commands attention, especially when you take a peek at the transformed interior.

Although it's safe to say all 375 units of the McLaren P1 are unique in their own right, some examples, and especially those gifted with McLaren Special Operations (MSO) parts, are a bit more special that the "standard" versions. Then there's the P1 in Schmee's video above. Granted, it might not look unusual at first glance, but give the footage a few seconds and you'll notice that the white-and-black exterior is complemented by gold wheels, a gold engine cover and gold McLaren badging. Sure, it's not unusual for certain cars to feature gold wheels (think Subaru WRX STi), but the P1's are actually gold-plated and, according to Schmee, crafted by McLaren's MSO division.
What's more, it seems it's not just the supercar's exterior that's finished in gold. Schmee says the interior trim is adorned by the same expensive metal, as is the exhaust heat shield. The latter was likely added in a nod to the McLaren F1, which had most of its engine hood wrapped in about 0.8 ounce of gold for heat insulation. Making this P1, which was spotted in Malaysia, that much more special is that it's the only one in the world that features bespoke VIN and chassis numbers, outside the usual 001-to-375 number run. Guess this owner wanted his P1 to be truly unique. Gold-plated parts, custom VIN number, I wonder what's next?

INKAS Armoured G63
Although the Mercedes-Benz G63 has gone from being a military vehicle to being used by surburban soccer moms to drive their kids to school, it still retains that almost brutal utilitarianism that it was originally designed for. INKAS Armored Vehicle Manufacturing, a Toronto-based company, has taken this military-like inspiration from the truck's original design and turned it into an armoured vehicle for the super-elite.
INKAS says that their armoured G-class is "in accordance with NIJ Standard 0108.01 Level 3 and/or CEN 1063 Level B6" and that it's reinforced floor can withstand the force from two DM51 grenades detonated at once. This means that it comes with enough reinforcement to provide protection against .308 Winchester FMJ ammunition. That really is some protection. But none of this matters if the vehicle can't get away from the bad guys. That's why INKAS bases their builds on the G63 AMG, with 563 hp on tap from it's twin-turbocharged V8.
Fortunately, the armour is not the only upgrade the G-Wagen receives. INKAS also stretches the middle of the chassis by 43 inches to make the cabin the last statement in luxurious travelling. The interior of the vehicle gets curved wood, a sea of leather, a satellite telephone and TV, a fridge, indoor exhaust system, and a pistol holder. Most of the interior features, such as lighting, seat positioning, cameras, HVAC, and audio/visual systems are controlled via an iPad mini that comes included with the car.
If you think that this luxury and protection don't come cheap, you would be right. Prices for the INKAS armoured G-Wagen start at an astonishing $1,000,000 USD. Seeing as how the half-million dollar price tag doesn't stop people from purchasing the G63 AMG 6 6, I don't see INKAS having too much trouble selling this tank.

After yesterday’s leak, Opel has officially taken the wraps off the Corsa OPC.
The design should be very familiar to those who have seen the very revealing spy shots from September 2014 with a prototype featuring a more aggressive body with beefier bumpers, larger side skirts and the usual flash blue paint used only on OPC models. Also noticeable are the enlarged air intakes with aluminum framing while in front of the hood there's a subtle scoop providing the hot hatch with an "additional optical dash of athleticism."
Moving at the back, Opel is offering a subtle spoiler attached to the trunk lid or an optional larger spoiler that increased downforce on the rear axle. It rides on 17-inch wheels shod in Michelin 215/45 R17 tires and comes with an OPC-optimized braking system with 308mm front discs, along with a dual exhaust system from Remus with a diffuser.
Power is provided by a four-cylinder, 1.6-liter Turbo ECOTEC engine delivering 207 HP (152 kW) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque channeled to the front axle through a six-speed manual gearbox featuring short ratios. This hardware setup grants the Corsa OPC with a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 6.8 seconds before topping out at 143 mph (230 km/h). Despite being seriously quick, the model manages to remain quite frugal as it will consume only 7.5 liters / 100 km (37.6 mpg UK or 31.3 mpg US) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 174 g/km.
At an additional cost, customers can equip their Corsa OPC with an optional Performance Package bringing a Drexler mechanical multi-disc differential lock, 18-inch rims wrapped around in Michelin tires along with a stiffer chassis setup and a Brembo braking system with 330mm front discs.
As far as the interior is concerned, the Opel Corsa OPC boasts Recaro performance seats with side support, flat-bottomed steering wheel covered in leather, as well as an OPC gear knob, sport pedals and the company’s IntelliLink infotainment system.
The 2015 Opel Corsa OPC will make its public debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show.

As the first test of the 2015 pre-season nears its end, more questions have emerged than have been answered.
McLaren, for one, has struggled with its odd-sounding new works Honda V6, but team figures are gushing about the 'size-zero' car for its revolutionary engine.
Fernando Alonso finally managed some consecutive, if uncompetitive laps in the MP4-30 on Tuesday before it once again broke down.
But the Spaniard was quoted by Germany's DPA news agency: "I know that sooner or later we will get where we want to be."
In total contrast, the recently turmoil-struck Ferrari emerged in southern Spain with an apparently fully-competitive SF15-T.
But Germany's Auto Motor und Sport believes the new Red Bull was actually eight tenths quicker on a comparable 'long run'.
And very few paddock dwellers doubt that the team to catch remains Mercedes.
"The frightening thing," said McLaren boss Eric Boullier, "is that on the first day they were already doing pitstop practice.
"That shows how confident they are. They had a big lead in 2014 and I think the rest of us can only hope that we can reduce that gap."
Confident maybe, but Mercedes knows too well that in an environment like formula one, anything is possible.
"Formula one is an unforgivable business," said technical boss Paddy Lowe.
He said the so-called 'engine unfreeze' has given Mercedes' rivals the perfect opportunity to catch up.
"The 32 tokens are a very generous gift," said Lowe.
"If you look at it carefully, you will realise that you are able to basically build a completely new engine."
And not everything has run completely smoothly for Mercedes at Jerez, driver Nico Rosberg revealed.
"The engine is not running as smoothly as last year. We still need to find the right settings," said the German.
Making full use of the 'token' system for 2015 is Red Bull's works supplier, Renault, who have also undergone a management shakeup over the winter.
Checking out progress at Jerez on Tuesday was Dietrich Mateschitz, the usually very low-profile Red Bull team owner.
What he witnessed was a Renault engine problem, but at the same time it is rumoured that the French marque is continuing to work hard on the electronic side of the 'power unit'.
And on a parallel project works Mario Illien, the fabled former Mercedes engine guru whose updated Renault combustion engine is slated to debut in time for the European season.
Finally, it is clear that the grid as a whole has taken a big step forward in 2015, with the new Sauber for instance a whopping 8.5 seconds quicker than its predecessor was at Jerez exactly a year ago.
Toro Rosso's pace, meanwhile, has stepped up to the tune of almost 7 seconds, followed by Ferrari (4) Mercedes (2) and Williams (1.5 seconds).

Mazda plans to resuscitate the MPS badge

Mazda2 MPS could happen
Mazda has announced plans to resurrect the MPS badge which can only mean some hot derivatives are in the works.
In an interview with British magazine Autocar, Mazda2's chief engineer Ayumu Doi said the MPS badge is "not dead" and they are "always investigating" the prospects of coming out with an MPS-badged model. A potential candidate for the moniker is the Mazda2 supermini while any other possible MPS models will take advantage of the company's array of Skyactiv technologies.
Mazda has not established the characteristics of these future MPS models which could get more power, improved dynamics or a combination of the two. Ayumu Doi did specify that whatever the end result will be, an MPS model will be built with upgraded parts from the Skyactiv catalog rather than getting bespoke components.
Aside from a potential Mazda2 MPS, earlier this week we heard Mazda's head of global public relations, Kudo Hidetoshi, saying the new MX-5 could receive the MPS treatment but a final decision has not been taken yet.

Porsche Cayman GT4 scares everyone in latest feature video

After yesterday’s online debut, the Porsche Cayman GT4 has returned in a new and arguably more exciting feature clip.
With the risk of cannibalizing sales of the iconic 911, Porsche has decided to launch a range-topping GT4 version of the Cayman which they describe as being a "long-awaited step beyond the boundary." In this latest video, the Cayman GT4 makes the transition from the city to the track, managing to frighten the bystanders.
It's not just any track as the video shows the Cayman GT4 tackling the Nürburgring and we know from Porsche the car is capable of lapping the Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 40 seconds. It's all possible thanks to a 385 HP flat-six 3.8-liter engine and a more aerodynamic body enhanced by a fixed rear wing along with a 30mm lowered ride height while the stopping power has been borrowed from the 911 GT3.
Positioned above the 340 HP Cayman GTS, the new GT4 is offered exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox which enables the model to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.4 seconds before topping out at 183 mph (295 km/h).

Buick increases US-spec Encore production by 50 percent to keep up with high demand

Buick has announced plans to boost production of the US-spec Encore subcompact crossover by 50 percent.
Revealed back in January 2012, the Buick Encore represents America's Opel Mokka and is turning out to be quite a success as General Motors is increasing production capacity of the US-spec model by approximately 50 percent to keep up with an increasing demand. The announcement was made by Buick-GMC Vice President Duncan Aldred who estimates the Encore will be the company's best-selling nameplate in 2015.
The model was very popular last year when sales jumped by 53 percent to 48,892 cars, enough to put the Encore on the third place in terms of sales after the Enclave (62,300) and LaCrosse (51,468). According to Keith Hudson, a dealer principal at Jim Hudson Buick-GMC-Cadillac in Columbia, the customer base is mostly represented by those in the 45 to 65 age interval who are traditional import buyers. Keith went on to specify they could sell more Encore units if they could get their hands on additional cars.
Due to the fact that GM builds the Encore/Mokka in Mexico, Korea and Spain, it's difficult for U.S. dealers to receive a steady supply of cars. For this reason, it takes approximately four months from the time when the dealer orders the car to when it's delivered which according to dealers is about double compared to a US built car. Now they hope the boosted production rate of the US-spec car will diminish the lag to further increase sales.
Ram to introduce a mysterious new model in Chicago

Ram has announced plans to introduce a mysterious new model at the Chicago Auto Show.
The company declined to elaborate but their five year plan revealed an updated Ram 1500 will be introduced sometime this year. It remains unclear if this what the company will introduce in Chicago but it's a possibility.
Regardless of what it is, the mystery model is scheduled to be unveiled on February 12th.

Rowan Atkinson's McLaren F1 can be Yours for $12M
Rowan Atkinson is quite the interesting fellow. A mainly comedic actor who made his name playing characters like Black Adder and Mr. Bean, the genial man has spent much of his spare time and wealth indulging in his real passion of cars. While he has owned dozens of machines over the years from exotic names like Ferrari and Aston Martin, one of his most prized automotive possessions is his McLaren F1. It has been one of his main daily drivers over the years and he has amassed a relatively astronomical 40,000 miles on the clock.
During that time, it has seen countless motorway journeys, many school runs and even a few days at the track. It has also seen the wrong end of an insurance adjuster twice. The first time Atkinson merely wrinkled it a bit, but his second crash nearly tore the car completely in half. Now after 17 years of ownership, - the longest tenure of any car he has owned - Mr. Bean has decided it is time to sell his beloved supercar.
If you are unfamiliar with the F1, you must be on the wrong Website for starters, but allow me to freshen your memory. This was an ultralight, ultrafast carbon-fiber supercar created by McLaren and it redefined the automobile. Powered by a BMW-sourced, V-12 engine that produced 627 horsepower, the F1 was capable of reaching 240 mph, making it the fastest production car in the world. A title it held for more than a decade until the Bugatti Veyron arrived. The car had many technical quirks over others on the market like its three-person seating with the driver mounted center, and the passengers slightly rearward and to each side. It also had an engine bay lined with gold foil, because gold is the best conductor of heat.
Sadly, Rowan Atkinson has finally decided it is time to part with his machine, so in just a few weeks' time, this incredible supercar - one of only 107 ever built - will have a new owner. That said, if you were hoping the high mileage and multiple collisions would make this thing a bargain, you better think again. As it stands, the car is being offered for no less than $12 million.

Video: Shmee Explains How to Remove the Roof of a Pagani Zonda 760 Roadster
Of the many problems there are to worry about in life, not knowing how to remove the hardtop from a Pagani Zonda 760 Roadster would be a nice one to have. But if you ever do have the pleasure of crossing paths with one of these ultra-rare hypercars, Schmee150 has just released a video showing exactly what it takes to open up the Zonda's closed cockpit to the elements.
This particular Zonda is reportedly a one-off creation, and it was visiting the London detailing shop to have protective film applied to its blue carbon-fiber body panels. Although the roof panel is super lightweight, made of just carbon fiber and only slightly more fabric than your typical loincloth, it still requires two people for its removal in order to not damage the engine's snorkel intake, which sits just about the roofline.
After covering up the air intake and opening up the rear clamshell engine cover - an amazing process in itself - then it's time to get to work taking the top off. There are a total of 12 snaps that hold the rear cloth portion of the roof in the place, while a center latch and two rotating clasps on each B-pillar keep the carbon fiber secured.
This roof-removal demonstration took about 90 seconds from start to finish, which means that it would likely take less time to get this car up to its top speed of well over 200 mph (several times over) than it would to get this Pagani to go topless.

Video: Tribute To 1954 Jensen 541
Great Britain was once home to a great number of sports car manufacturers. At one point, the Brits even rivaled the Italians on both the streets and the race tracks, until several UK-based companies began going under and having their factories closed. Jensen Motors is one of these. Founded in 1934, it made a name for itself by building both commercial vehicles and light sports cars. It's most iconic cars were the CV8, which used 5.9- and 6.3-liter, Chrysler V-8 engines, and the Interceptor. Sold between 1966 and 1976, the Interceptor also used Chrysler-sourced engines, including the massive 7.2-liter RB block, making it the most powerful "hybrid" to blend European styling with American oomph. Unfortunately, the Interceptor wasn't successful enough to keep Jensen from going under in 1976 and joining the long list of British automakers that succumbed in the second half of the 20th century.
Fortunately, several Jensen cars became full-fledged classics as early as the 1990s, encouraging enthusiasts to buy and restore them, and parade them across Britain. One such car is the 541, a grand tourer that Jensen built only 127 of between 1960 and 1963. Manufactured only with right-hand drive, all 541 were sold in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Nowadays, however, a bunch of them have made it across the English Channel to other European countries. Interestingly enough. one even made it to Italy, a country otherwise known to favor local classics from the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Lancia and Alfa Romeo.
The owner of the blue coupe you're about to see is Gianfranco Giovine, perhaps the only Italian to fall in love with the Jensen 541 and buy one, waiting no fewer than four weeks to have it shipped from Ireland in 2011. "I was awestruck by the beauty of this car, by its curves, by the sound of its engine," Giovine told Petrolicious, adding that the 541 was a car that put him in a position "to chase it as if it were a beautiful woman." I must admit I never thought an Italian could fall in love with a British car that's not an Aston Martin or a Jaguar, but it seems love has its ways when it comes to automobiles too. Ferrari M458-T
There's been a lot of commotion around Ferrari's decision to turbocharge the California, one that created a new departure from the company's naturally aspirated leanings. If you're among those that got a little upset over the forced induction treatment received by the California, despite huge torque gains, then you'd better buckle up because the Italians are planning yet another switch.
According to CAR, who got its ears on some precious info circulating around Maranello, the 458 Italia is the next Ferrari to benefit from turbocharging. Specifically, Ferrari engineers are no longer looking to squeeze more power from the familiar 4.5-liter V-8 unit, but to replace it altogether with the 3.8-liter powerplant that debuted in the California T. Of course, the mid-engined Prancing Horse will receive more than just the 560 ponies powering the latter.
Word has it the next 458 Italia - reportedly dubbed the M458-T - will pack as much as 670 bhp (680 horsepower), meaning the Italians are trying to regain the precious crown they lost right after McLaren unleashed the staggering 650S. Since adding more than 100 ponies to a twin-turbo powerplant via boost pressure shouldn't be a problem for the sharp-witted folks at Maranello, we expect the upgraded sports car to be a lot faster than the current model, with the 0-to-60 benchmark to drop from 3.4 seconds to the high 2-second arena.
The M458-T will also benefit from the company's latest developments in terms of technology, CAR adds without revealing any specific details, but expect some fuel-saving and turbo lag-eliminating tricks.
Scheduled to break cover in 2015, the turbocharged 458 must be undergoing extensive testing as we speak. With that in mind, it's very likely that the mule our spy photographers spotted earlier this year had a forced-induction unit under its rear glass. Hopefully, we'll find out more about that soon enough.
Updated 02/02/2015: Ferrari unveiled a series of teaser images for the future M458-T, which of course reveal pretty much nothing of the car, but announced an official debut will be made tomorrow. A teaser video was also dropped, and while it also reveals nothing about the car, it gives a pretty good idea of how the engine will sound. Stay tuned!
