UPM Biofore concept
Features a variety of eco-friendly components
UPM and students from the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences have teamed up to unveil the Biofore concept at the Geneva Motor Show.
Envisioned as an eco-friendly automobile of the future, the Biofore has an aerodynamic exterior with a distinctive greenhouse and suicide rear doors.
Styling aside, the construction is what really sets the Biofore apart from other concepts. Instead of using traditional materials, the Biofore uses thermoformable wood for the passenger compartment floor, door panels and center console. The front bumper, side skirts, dashboard and interior panels were also made from Formi biocomposite materials. These components aren't just eco-friendly as UPM says they are 150 kg (330 lbs) lighter than traditional components.
Motivation is provided by a 1.2-liter diesel engine which runs on UPM’s wood-based BioVerno diesel fuel.
According to UPM's Vice President of Brand and Communications, Elisa Nilsson, “The Biofore Concept Car showcases the potential of UPM’s biomaterials. Not only for the automotive industry, but also for various other end-uses including design, acoustics - a wide range of industrial and consumer applications. The possibilities are endless."
