Could be launched next summer
Our spies have already caught the 2015 / 2016 BMW X1 on numerous occasions but new details are starting to emerge about the entry-level crossover.
According to Automotive News Europe, the model will be smaller than its predecessor when it is launched in June 2016. The crossover is also expected to feature ruggedized styling which will help it look "less like a small station wagon."
While the model will be shorter, the publication is reporting there will be a long-wheelbase variant for China, Russia and the United States. The long-wheelbase model will reportedly have a third row of seats as well as additional luggage capacity.
Engines will likely carryover from the 2-Series Active Tourer so expect choices to include:
- A 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol with 136 PS (100 kW) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque
- A 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with 184 PS (135 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque
- A 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with 231 PS (170 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque
- A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 150 PS (110 kW) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque
- A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 184 PS (135 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque
There could also be a plug-in hybrid variant with a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. This could enable the model to have a combined output of 190 PS (140 kW) and an electric-only range of roughly 30 km (19 miles)
